Not being funny, but I think you're seriously underselling - a 1 carat diamond, colour H, even at SI2 crap quality is still worth $4k+ retail.
This makes me 1.) Smell a rat, or 2.) Suggest the Op takes it to a diamond dealer to sell for a much higher price. A local dealer would surely snap that up at $3k without batting an eyelid and you'd have double the money you want.
My two bobs worth, not confessing to be an expert.

Just take to any shop, selling diamonds? Since I don't have a shop I didn't think I could ask anything close to retail. I'm on Pastuer St. right now.
Worth a go at one of those shops around Central Market surely? At least they'll be able to tell you if it really is 1 carat, colour H, what quality, etc. Perhaps they'd tried to scam you down to $1k - or just tell you its fake and worthless, but maybe they might just make you a bigger offer; nothing to lose by trying I think. I'd bargain at $4k (very small margin if they do believe they can sell it on) & see what they offer back if anything.
Thread definitely worth a
Good luck!

I wonder how a guy in Phnom Penh comes into possession of a ladies diamond ring appraised at $5750 and then wants to sell it for $1200.

Well, I just went to several shops. Most barely glanced at it and said "not buy"(They only buy from their suppliers, even though the sign outside say buy and sell
The ones that looked at it say it's real all right, but it has an inclusion. They told me in Cambodia this is bad luck. In the states this just proves that it's real. Fakes are all perfect. Guess I'll just leave it in a junk drawer. Maybe when my son comes to visit he can take it back and sell it over there.
GM, I took it back from my wife when we split up. Since I just found out it's unlucky, you can delete the thread.

This is interesting to me, because I know the OP has posted before that he met his wife 25 years ago and was married 16 years. Taking back the ring in that situation seems unusual. Is there a Cambodian custom on this that ex-wives give rings back more freely?

Sad to hear sorry, wonder if they're just suspicious of a westerner trying to flog a ring - it might also confirm that the diamond sellers here haven't a Scooby what they're looking at & their certificates are fake. If somebody came to me with a $4k+ ring and as a retailer I could get it for $2-3k, I'd take it. But then maybe that's why I'm not a diamond seller!zerotwosixty wrote:Well, I just went to several shops.
