Steve also owns 'The Kingdom Resort & Spa' and they have two adverts in the same edition as well.gavinmac wrote:Freebird is selling hamburgers for $2 now. Is that a sign things are not going well there?
They actually have two color ads in the Cambodia Daily today. Maybe they prepaid for advertising and are now demanding to get their money's worth before the September 4 doomsday.
Plus he has (unless things have changed) shares in 'The Home of English' school which has a full page colour advert.
All three businesses are pretty low quality. And he really should hire a decent graphic designer; the adverts are really poor.
I think the Kingdom Resort is excellent. They have a great pool for the kids, a nice shaded sitting area....and a full western menu and bar so I can get decent food.
I haven't been to Kingdom Resort for a while but when last there the kids had a great time but I found the menu to be a bit hit or miss.
I saw the post about the $2 burgers yesterday so went down to Freebird last night and had the Giant burger and "extra" fries and coleslaw. I say "extra" as it didn't seem that there was any more than a standard serving of both so it was, you know, just fries and coleslaw, no extra.
The burger was surprisingly good. Juicy very flavoursome meat. A little tomato and onion, tiny bit pickle and no stupid sauce - allowed the taste of a good burger to shine through. The coleslaw was a little sweet but then I think I always find it that way. The chips/fries are nice and thick but need more cooking time (or hotter, or cooked twice or whatever) they were a little soggy in the middle.
All in all, I'd recommend the burger. The Anchor draft is $1 and there were no other customers there while I was in.

The big ads for Freebird, Kingdom Resort, and Home of English are in today's issue too. Maybe he gives the paper food in exchange for advertising.Rama wrote:Steve also owns 'The Kingdom Resort & Spa' and they have two adverts in the same edition as well.gavinmac wrote:Freebird is selling hamburgers for $2 now. I went into Freebird a few days ago for lunch. I was the only customer. I ordered the $6 smoked chicken sandwich. Hardly any chicken in it at all. The 3% service charge adds insult to injury.

Yes, 10% or 0%. I don't know what the 3% is supposed to cover.maven wrote:3%? It should be 10, should it not?

The Public Lighting Tax is an indirect tax with the rate of 3% to be imposed on all alcoholic drinks and cigarettes. The person who supplies these products is responsible for the payment of this tax to the tax administration by the 20th of the month following the month that the supplies are made. http://www.tax.gov.kh/en/bpl.phpgavinmac wrote:Yes, 10% or 0%. Did they still offer the cold face towels dressed with lavender petals or the awesome peanuts with fried garlic bits? Their bread always sucked. Stale and bulletproof. I thought you would have known better than to order a sandwich. Good stuff on the inside before but ruined by the bread.gavinmac wrote:I went into Freebird a few days ago for lunch. It didn't say tax. It said service charge. And I had a chicken sandwich and Coke, not booze and cigarettes.Mèo Đen wrote:The Public Lighting Tax is an indirect tax with the rate of 3% to be imposed on all alcoholic drinks and cigarettes. So no 10% VAT? Many barang restaurants and hotels have been forced to repay VAT. They were all pocketing it. Partly because the VAT reflected the turnover of your business and exposed yourself to increased income tax. Some paying back VAT and income tax at $100,000 a year or more.

Service charge is decided by the owner.gavinmac wrote:It didn't say tax. It said service charge. It can be 3%, 5% or 10%, up to them. There's no law about it.
