We Need Your Extra Books!
Right now, I’m an English teacher at an international school in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. This school is a great place to work and the students have a real eagerness to learn. However, while the school sits on a lovely campus, its library is woefully underfunded. There are some books for the students to read, but not nearly enough for them to develop the type of word power of which they are capable.
As I’m sure you already know, Cambodia was nearly destroyed by a genocidal government (Khmer Rouge). This government believed anyone who was educated needed to be removed from society. Today’s Cambodia is still reeling from this policy. Vast sections of the population are completely illiterate. This should never be the case…not in the 21st century. The Cambodian people hunger for growth and thirst for knowledge. Knowledge is a power the Cambodian people strongly desire. Though your help will speed this along considerably.
The way you can help is extremely simple. Send us your new, gently used or used books. It’s that easy!
Our school is divided into several campuses, based upon age group. You can send us books for any age group (K-12) and we will distribute them to the appropriate campuses. Every campus needs books and every book will be put to fullest use immediately.
Once we’ve received your book, we will send you a receipt via email and affix your name to the inside cover. Every future student who reads your book, will know your name and learn with humble gratitude.
Please send your donated book to our main campus. Thank you in advance for your kindness and understanding.
(We are asking for NO MONEY…except the cost to you for shipping and handling.)

Oh come one. You seriously can't be that naive.
This is a for-profit business. You aren't asking people to donate to a charity. You are asking them to give to a school which charges a healthy fee for students to study.
How about you appeal to the owner to forsake some of his profits to kit out a library and let book donations be given to genuine worthy causes

Western International School is owned by extremely wealthy founders.
I have many books, but I tend to donate them to more worthwhile causes.

I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.

I put 'underfunded' for a reason. We can't get the books for the students. I know what Western International School is and isn't. I wasn't passing it off as a charity. I'm just a teacher, trying to give my students a leg up. I've tried to get it funded, but it's not going to happen. There's no reason the students need to suffer for that. Really, I'm just doing what I can to help out. We have encyclopedias from the early 90's. If you want to keep your books, then do it. I was just looking for any expats who had a bit too much luggage or something like that. Really, best intentions at heart. Truly.

Yeah best intentions but this case is a parable of Cambodia, foreign donors and Cambodian government for the past 20 years.
As long as well meaning, but naive, people give then the profiteering owners will continue to get richer and not meet their own responsibilities.

I've got about 150 books I want to get rid off as they are using up too much space. They are mostly about war, serial killers and Jesus. Would these be any use to you? I can drop them off tomorrow.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Yeah, I know it can be expensive to get books but Western is a private school, and, as others said above, the owners are extremely wealthy; they not only own Western (schools and university)they have shares or part ownership of Westec media, legend cinema, city mall, restaurants and cafes etc etc.
Fair enough doing a book drive, all schools do them, but doing the pity-Khner-Rouge thing is a bit OTT.
If you're looking for books at a discounted cost, D's books can arrange boxes of assorted school books. Many schools in PP use them for this.

Phillip, instead of using encyclopaedias from the 90s have you considered Wikipedia? Smart Axiata is a partner of the Wikipedia Zero program meaning that Smart subscribers can access Wikipedia for free. https://blog.wikimedia.org/2013/03/19/a ... rtnership/

Philip, I was one of the first teachers who worked at Western.
They had one campus then, on St 528, school and university in the same building.
This was back in 2002. They had donations of books then, from Canada, I think perhaps the same sets of accounting/ programming/encyclopedias someone mentioned.
Since then they have opened a university campus in Kampong Cham, numerous new campuses and kindergartens in Phnom Penh and elsewhere.
I think they can afford a very nice library now.

I've never heard of a 'factory' school owner in Cambodia whose asshole wouldn't pucker up tighter than a snare drum when you asked them for funds.
Not sure what your walk down memory lane has to do with the OP's query, vlad.
But whilst we're reminiscing, would you be so kind as to recount the story of your sacking from Western?
It's a doozy, and has become part of impoverished tefl-jobber lore. Enchant the uninitiated or shall I?
