Rob,
They turn any TV into a smart TV in which you can load up apps like you would a phone or a tablet. For example, I use You Tube to watch the news..as all the major networks have live streams up. There are apps like Mobdro that give you a ton of free live TV channels. There is an app called Kodi that is an open source entertainment platform. In short, Kodi can "scrape" the net to find any content you want....so you have free access to almost any TV show or movie ever made. Plus concerts, cooking videos, stand up, live sports...etc. etc. So, if you want Game of Thrones it pulls up ever season every episode.....and does the same for nearly any TV series ever made.
Besides Kodi, there are a ton of apps that also give you nearly unlimited movies and TV.
In addition, the Fire TV comes with a voice activated remote. "Alexa" acts like "Siri" on an iphone. What I like about it is I can tell it to play jazz or Neil Young....and it instantly starts a shuffle. I can also tell it to play my favorite sports talk station from the U.S. Now you can do all of this on your computer or a phone....but I find it very handy to have tied to the TV and I use it quite a bit.
After years of shitty cable TV here....it has been a game changer for me.

Rice,
I am also locked out of most of the Amazon apps due to geo restrictions. I logged in using IP Vanish....a VPN, and it did not work. So, I guess I would have to change my DNS or get a program that does this. I can't be bothered. Any of the content that I want...I can find using Kodi, Terrarium, or several other apps.

You sound like you know about this stufff. Sort of a non-sequitur but GT do you know ANYWHERE one can access HBO, Showtime stuff without doing a full time subscription. I have Mediasack for movies which is very inexpensive, but never found something similar for HBO etc.Gin&Tonic wrote:Getflix is of course a dns service. How getflix (and others) circumvent geolocation restrictions is what you don't understand or at least are ignorant of. It does involve vpn's but that's on their end and completely transparent.
You consider advising ricecakes to get a ddwrt compatible router, then flash ddwrt, subscribe to a VPN, configure the VPN etc etc. That's not going to happen this lifetime. No offence rice cakes.
Or he could subscribe to getflix (or similar), change ONE setting in his router, and be done. No new hardware. Be able to access georestricted content from multiple regions simultaneously and be using all the available bandwidth from his ISP.
But yeah, your method is (not) better because you're so smart(arrogant).
Bless
Thanks,
M

I think I don't quite understand all of this but I use LiquidVPN for hulu, netlix and amazon prime and it works well. I'm thinking maybe you are thinking of something else....

What is the geographical requirement for the apps you are trying to access, USA? So are you saying if you log on to an IP Vanish USA server it doesn't circumvent the geoblock or am I misunderstanding?LoneStar wrote:Rice,

Mateo,
My point is that I don't need to bother getting access to those geo restricted apps.....because I can find the same content elsewhere. For example, I don't have to jump through hoops to gain access to Netflix, because there is an app called Terrarium that has all of the Netflix content.

You can also find all of the HBO and Showtime content very easily. Mobdro has a bunch of them live...and any movie, or series they are providing is out there on Terrarium, Kodi, or a ton of other sites like them.
