I am just reporting that she doesn't feel discriminated against. Girl is fine and used in the west by lots of ladies too. If you feel the need for all that PC stuff, fill your wagon. She's my girl and the vernacular has no bearing on her age. She will still be my girl when shes 50. I just don't want to say my missus, or the bird, or my lady, or any other reference, (but I am open for suggestions) You get the point, so what's the problem here, serious question?ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:How many female oknas are there? What about governors, senators? It’s a male dominated society. There are clear female jobs and male jobs, generally the female jobs are lower. Walk into Acleida bank and check out the customer facing staff,
95+% female, the guys have the more senior, non customer facing roles. Open your eyes.
And ‘my girl’...

Is using the word 'Girl' demeaning or something? Why is a distinction made then for 'teenage girl' or school girl or even young girl. Girl is just female, and all encompassing. Merriam Webster seems to agree. Nothing smelly here as far as I can see.

While I agree that it's a a male dominated society, there are plenty of female Oknhas and senators. I'll dig out some more solid information later.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: How many female oknas are there?

Yeah, I’m not saying there are none. But i’d Be willing to bet that they are vastly outnumbered.Lucky Lucan wrote:While I agree that it's a a male dominated society, there are plenty of female Oknhas and senators. Across the western world, the disparity has a lot more to do with ambition and desire in Career. Women just do not want it as bad as men. The other disadvantage is loss of working years due to childbearing and raising, which also changes priorities.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:Yeah, I’m not saying there are none. The most progressive societies like Sweden have revealed surprising new data; women that are not fighting for choice and equality will make more traditional gender specific choices in career than in less progressive societies. What does that tell us?
Academia and post graduate programs are now disproportionately female in the west. Most of the Khmer ladies I have met prefer the traditional social order of the male as protector and provider and the woman as the nurturer and homemaker. Its seems to be embraced here and not resented as is true throughout Asia.

I agree with the points above, however one aspect that has made a difference here for some time are the unusual demographics. The bad times took a disproportionate toll on men here, and therefore many families are headed by Yeay's rather than Ta's. It's not always obvious but many powerful men here are under the thumb of these family matriarchs.

Its what I like about SEA. I cant advertise for a female secretary in the west, but I would never hire a guy for the job either. I just don't want a male PA. I like them to be moderately attractive, but not too much to be distracting.
