Warning
This is a word of warning to those of you who have not been here long.
Do NOT give any aspiring school developers/owners any information/advice they cannot find for themselves/a consultant would normally provide.
Episode 1
Years ago, a guy was asking around town about getting advice to set up a school. I met him, we talked, and he asked me to design a curriculum (and the basic requirements of the building) for a school he was going to build.
Land no problem, he said, money no object. Anyway, I spent about 2 weeks doing this, riding around town with him, looking at prospective sites, books, curricula etc. In the 3rd week or so, he took me to see the 'site'. I was surprised, as he had told me we were still looking for land.
So, surprise, surprise, we end up looking at 4 newly-built condos, side by side, which he has suddenly decided are good enough to serve as the school. The condos just happen to be part of daddy's construction business.
At this point I realise what is happening (I know, I was very naive back then) and decide to call it quits.
He thanks me, and asks me if there is anything he can do for me. My visa was up for renewal, so I mentioned that. 'Sure, he says, ''just bring your passport, we'll fix it.'
So 3 days later I get a call, the passport was ready, and he adds 'Just bring the money'.
An argument ensues, during which time he says 'OK, I suppose I can swallow this'.
He then employs a very well-known expat as a principal, at the princely rate of $800/month...and the guy never gets paid.
To be continued...

Indeed. Get a written agreement first. Basic interview-level questions, fine. Any work/consultant-level info, they pay/sign first.Starving Pelican wrote:Sounds like more of a warning to agree on terms prior to carrying out the job, and especially to refrain from handing your passport to people without a proven track record.

Why would the OP hand over his passport to someone who (if I'm reading the chronology correctly) he had already decided was dodgy? That's just asking for trouble and pretty naive for someone who has been here as long as i believe vladimir has.
I know I'm unloveable. You don't have to tell me. I don't have much in my life, but take it - it's yours.

This was maybe 10 years ago...I trusted people more then, and was hoping for at least something for the time/work I had put in.
The choice of building put me on edge, yes, perhaps I should have seen what was coming earlier.
I just don't want the same thing happening to others, that's all.

Didn't you also recently 'hand over' your passport, yet again, for another reason? That story might also be a teachable moment for us if you care to share.

Recently? Can you be more precise? Concentrate now...gibbon arms wrote:Didn't you also recently 'hand over' your passport, yet again, for another reason? That story might also be a teachable moment for us if you care to share.
At present I'm applying for a voluntourism stint with a place called The Sleazy Language School, they took my passport, the gig is a gift, only $2000 to teach poor under-privilged victims of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, landmines in the city, tigers in the jungle, muddy tracks on the riverside...great, yes!

I enjoyed the OP. Sure it's not a movie script but why not share the experience?

I feel the same way. Not everyone is a born writer and has time to refine things into a polished work by any means, but that's part of why I like forums. There's stuff to read and people to associate with in "real time" so to speak. You get the content right from the cow's mouth.GMJS-440 wrote:I enjoyed the OP. Honestly, I've been getting really bored recently on here. Granted I wasn't here for the spat between K440 and CEO so I missed all that fun, but it seems like things have gotten dull since I've been here. Besides a few articles here and there, some adventure threads from Mr. Londo and some thought provoking questions and nice language threads from Joon, I feel like this place is mostly a few bulk threads (Life is Bored, etc.), tragic news blurbs, with the occasional "entertainment" and dining thread (Funny Khmer ads, etc) that a few posters are trying to keep alive.
By all means, I think people should write more whether their adventures and advice are new or not. I for one would like more substance reading.

Surely the overriding lesson in the OP is not to hand your passport over to third parties. Not only is it irresponsible in that you are then up shit creek if they decide to hold onto it, but it's also illegal. It is not your passport to give away.
Vlaidmir was lucky in this instance. He may not be so next time.
