I agree completely, with the possible exception of Chulalongkorn in Bangkok for some subjects. Singapore is the only place where the universities will encourage and train the students to think, although I suspect that even there they will emphasize rote learning more than necessary.SunSan wrote:If you're looking at universities in the region, look no further than Singapore. It's maybe OK to send your children to another country for education once they are 16 years or over but frankly I'd not be happy doing that until they were 18 and onto Uni. So they'd have to receive their education wherever I happened to be but that almost certainly means some sacrifice by the parents at times.

In my opinion, once they've gotten to university, it's a moot point. If they've been trained up through high school in rote learning and haven't received any training and encouragement to think outside the box independently and analytically otherwise, it's too late for them to learn to do so at Uni.Buscador wrote: Singapore is the only place where the universities will encourage and train the students to think, although I suspect that even there they will emphasize rote learning more than necessary.

Wasn't our old sparring partner Alvin 'Chlimmy' Lim a Singapore university lecturer? He was undoubtedly the most closed-minded poster ever to (dis)grace the pages of this website.Singapore is the only place where the universities will encourage and train the students to think.....

I have to take issue with that since that's my job - or at least, I make it my job.Jacked Camry wrote: In my opinion, once they've gotten to university, it's a moot point. A certain proportion of undergrads who take my classes drop out because they can't or won't think, but the majority really blossom by the end of a term or two's hard slog. The problem is that teachers like me work in isolation with no encouragement from a management and ministry that pay no real attention to quality of education at this level. It's a shame - the students do have the capacity even at this late stage to learn to think critically and creatively but they are cheated by a system that promises international standard tertiary education whilst making no effort to deliver and marginalise teachers like me.
EDIT: great minds and all that [Dude, I'm LUVVIN' watching Citeh run riot on my new 42" plasma mama]. No, Chlim was not a university professor in Singapore. He was a Singaporean freakazoid teaching in Cambodia. Big difference - I doubt he'd ever get a post in Singapore.

Many people believe that 'educational' systems are just societal indoctrination/conditioning, so debatable.
How much stuff that we learned at school have we never used? A huge amount.

I didn't do well at school at all just played the fool and was a smart arse even though on the odd occasion when I did apply myself and wasn't disrupting the class I did quite well. Was only ever interested in fishing, spearfish and surfing and that was it! Left school at 15 and 9 months and did a trade, got board of that after about 10 years then went to University as a mature age student got my ass kicked first year but never failed a subject and graduated. You could say I had very limited school and still made it through the system...but it was hard!
Don't mention the Giant Panda in the room.

I would say basic reading and writing and arithmetic are important. The value of school and university is not what you learn from books, but what you learn about how to socialise, think and enquire.vladimir wrote:Many people believe that 'educational' systems are just societal indoctrination/conditioning, so debatable.

Me too, I left school at age 15, as soon as I knew the difference between getting bored and board.

Agree, but who decides how to socialise, think and enquire? And is the ultimate objective of their agenda to benefit society, or to benefit the rich?Northern Monkey wrote:I would say basic reading and writing and arithmetic are important.
