Not getting paid
Not getting paid
I work for a international school here in Phnom Penh. On Friday I was paid half of my salary from two months ago with promises that the rest is coming soon. I really just want to quit but I can't afford to leave without my salary.
Does anyone on here know any avenues one might take to getting a paycheck after quitting their job? That being said I do not want to resort to violence.
Thanks in advance for any information. I have been living here 8 months and I know this is my first post which as usual is a question. I will try to be active and help other newbees out in the future.

rent out one of those PA speaker systems they use for weddings/funerals and park outside the school all day whilst blaring "i want my money, i want my money" all god damn day.

There is no recourse, unless you are friendly with any of the parents. Paying punters are infinitely more valuable than the best barang teacher.
When you quit, name and shame the school, making sure they damn well know what you're doing. It used to be common for ruthless schools to do this, but not so much now; therefore, any half decent western teacher will know to stay away. The likely upshot will be all the foreign teachers will be African, at which point parents will withdraw their children wholesale. THEN they'll regret their short-term unprofessionalism.

I've heard about staff leaving and taking valuable equipment with them like stereos and and video cameras and holding them until they get paid.. but that kind of stuff can blow back on you, as normally schools are connected with someone with some level of clout.JT78 wrote:I work for a international school here in Phnom Penh. You could wait it out. Sometimes this means you get to a point where you have lost such an enormous amount of money that you can ever afford to leave. What do the other teachers say? Does this happen often? Does it normally get resolved?
You could just cut your losses. Depending on what your work arrangement is, you may have to concede to losing 1 months salary if you quit on bad terms anyway.
ogustaaf, I did say "other newbees", which would refer to myself as one.
Everyone else, thank you for the info. It is the end of the year and I am in possession of of final exams and report cards but as Doctor Seuss pointed out withholding things can blow back in your face.
There are a few other teachers that would be on board but you never know. One word get back to the administration and I'm #@%$. Even posting on here might be a little risky.

get a job at another school and name them.
PM someone on here to give them the name of the school you are at, most of the people posting in this area will have an idea of which schools have a history of this, and therefore you'll get an indication of whether this is a one off (no excuse, but it has just been the festival), or is it a recurring problem. If it's a recurring problem, cut your losses now. Get out, get another job. Name the bastards on here.
Some schools/universities DO have a history of doing this and people become trapped because they don't walk away soon enough.
Some places will hold on to your pay until you return final exam marks... Discuss it directly with someone at the school.. have you done that... someone other than the Director (say, Payroll/HR) or Payroll/HR (say, Director).
Return the papers/marks... that only messes up the students. The school won't care.

OP, there is only one real international school in PP, that is ISPP. Any others claiming to be really 'international', well , ask them where their kids are going to school. The answer may be revealing.
I seriously doubt that ISPP would withhold pay for any unjust reason.
The rest of them, well, I could tell you stories, but shit has no morals / ethics/ whatever, and pursuing this can only end in trouble. As Gandhi so accurately observed, education without ethics is wasted. If you were unjustly treated (and I don't know the full story, so I won't assume), just let it go, and let evil people get on with storing up bad karma. The greatest satisfaction comes from knowing that these bastards have to live with themselves. Can you imagine a worse punishment for such people?Just move on, and thank God you found out people you nearly stayed with for a long time sooner rather than later.
