Language Corps: what do you think?
Language Corps: what do you think?
I need to do a TEFL cert and got into a CELTA course in HCMC, but I don't really care for the hassles of VN. That course is $1600. The Language Corps TESOL here in PP is a bit more at $1750 and I'm not sure if it's accredited or as good as the CELTA. What do you think? Has anyone done the Language Corp course and were you satisfied? Will any prospective employer really care?

Get the Celta. It's accredited and will open doors for you all around the world.DieHard wrote:I need to do a TEFL cert and got into a CELTA course in HCMC, but I don't really care for the hassles of VN. If you don't do the CELTA, and you intend to teach, you will regret it. The CELTA is tops for getting jobs, but it's going to mean one month of all work and very little play, but the financial advantages are worth it.
TEFL/TESOL doesn't come close.

CELTA = 1600
LCT = 1750
Why pay more for an inferior product?

that price for LanguageCorps must be a typo. If they are charging that these days.... run a mile. Walk slowly away and do the CELTA anyway. It's worth it!
I've done both the LanguageCorps course and CELTA. I recommend the CELTA

Does the CELTA include : 3 day excursion to Siem Reap and Angkor Wat, 3 day excursion to the beach resort town of Sihanoukville and Welcome and Graduation dinners?

Thanks for all the input. Guess I'll be trudging off to HCMC one of these days.

Not sure the 3 days excursions etc. justify the difference in price, or whether they will help you in an interview.hanky wrote:Does the CELTA include : 3 day excursion to Siem Reap and Angkor Wat, 3 day excursion to the beach resort town of Sihanoukville and Welcome and Graduation dinners?
Experience?
None, but I've been to Angkor Wat, Sihanoukville, and attended two dinners.
Well, I guess you're our man, then.

Do not waste your money on Language Corps. It will not be recognized by any quality school anywhere, even here.
In my research of programs to pursue, it seems that CELTA is what you should go for if you're considering TESOL as a career path. If you're considering doing a one-year gap program and using the money you make from teaching to support your travels for awhile, then maybe a more relaxed TESOL certification program is for you. A matter of personal preference.
I haven't decided yet which path to pursue when I ultimately come to Cambodia around the turn of the new year. I'll have a master's degree in political science, a strong journalism portfolio, connections in various Southeast Asian press clubs, and no experience teaching. I'm hoping to pursue a writing career, but in case it takes awhile for that to kick start, I'm going to rely on teaching for awhile. That's why for me, I'm leaning more towards a program like LC so I can become acclimated to the country through various excursions, easily be introduced to people in a similar situation as me, and learn a little about teaching in the process. Personally, after 6 years of post-secondary education and the production of a 120 page thesis, I'm exhausted even contemplating a program like CELTA, even for just a month. But I also don't want to set up shop without any classroom experience. Hence, why a program like LC may be good for me. Although I haven't decided yet.

Nonsense. It is recognised in Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Korea. Outside of Asia though it's absolutely worthlessHot_Pink_Urinal_Mint wrote:Do not waste your money on Language Corps. It will not be recognized by any quality school anywhere, even here.

One reason (outside of the content of the course) I have an issue with LanguageCorps is that they are affiliated with PUC, and most (if not all) the Western English Lanaguage Instructors at that institute believe that their low pay rate is due to this fact that there is a revolving door of newly certified students on gap year holidays (mostly, but not all by any means) to step into the shoes of any well qualified and well experienced expat teacher who wants to complain about the pay rate. The teachers have played with the idea of a mass strike, but knew that it was pointless as there are so many newbies eager to step in and get some experience/play money.Pecahead wrote:In my research of programs to pursue, it seems that CELTA is what you should go for if you're considering TESOL as a career path.
