Zaman is indeed controlled by a Turkish cult called The Gulen Movement. Its members have sworn allegiance to the founder of the movement and have agreed to move anywhere in the world the authorities tell them too. According to some reports, the authorities even arrange marriages for them.
Overall, I endorse 95% of what Lorena says. The school is indeed gender segregated. The female teachers aren't trusted to mix with males. They even force the students to exist in separate "wings", and there is giant wire fence which separates boys and girls in the yard, with a tennis court in between to make sure they can't even speak through the wire. This whole Islamist "separation of the sexes" routine is rigidly enforced even though it is totally inappropriate to the Buddhist students. Their ideology is enforced throughout every area of the school- even the canteens.
Most of the staff are quite nice people as individuals, but they have all sworn allegiance to the "movement". No one ever questions the authorities because it is all God's will. Mind you, no one ever mentions Gulen, the movement or Islam at all. It is this giant elephant on the table which dominates every aspect of school organisation and philosophy but is completely unmentionable and off bounds.
The worst thing though is the terrible standard of English instruction in the school. Most of the kids can't punctuate a simple sentence. This is no surprise when you consider the low level of English fluency that most of the Turkish staff have. I have taught at a few schools in Phnom Penh and the English of students is usually better at the $10 an hour places than it is at Zaman. The parents aretruly getting fleeced there. I was glad to leave a couple of years ago and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

I like Turkish food.
Not to your standards? Maybe you just don't fit in.
If they all speak Turkish there, maybe they have Turkish food here as well?
Secular Muslims? Or just secular?

Nice rant.
Remove talk about muslims and turks, and you have that circulation in the whole of the academic structure of cambodia (with the exception of one or three (?) schools).
Most schools don't care what their teachers do. Only what their khmer staff don't do. They have these policies and self-made structures that have the parents' mouths watering at the idea of their child getting quality in their education, when in reality it's what you say.
Just like the political thunderstorm surrounding the country-although parents could do more to help the genuinely nice teachers- the only ones that can change the majority or even restructure the whole system are the khmer people. If or When they wake up and realize that what they're doing is walking backwards not forwards.

I worked in a Gulen school in Turkey last year and it was nothing like you describe, so I guess someone is getting the message wrong. Gulen himself is not necessarily a hardline "Islamist", despite what you may have heard or imagined. The main thrust of the Gulen Movement's activity is not so much spreading an Islamic message, though that is certainly part of it, but it has more more to do with pan-Turkic unity and the expansion of a "Greater Turkey". He sees himself as a pasha of a rejuvenated Ottoman Empire.JavaBenny wrote:Zaman is indeed controlled by a Turkish cult called The Gulen Movement. Re: Zaman University
I taught evening classes there for the CEE programme.
Lovely place to work, good pay, class rooms some of the best I have seen here, thoroughly professional management.

A friend of mine did the same thing and she enjoyed her time there. She pretty much said the same as Vladimir. So that counts as 2 (for now).

Turks are cheapskates. They like to get someone for nothing. Pays you $10 and let you travel far .
and pays for non - native speaker 700 USD working 45 hours a week for teaching Science and math.
They consider themselves Native speaker which is really funny.
Like the other Poster said you need to have Saturdays and some remedials.
Just not worth for anyone's time to waste. I advice look for something better.

working hours monday to saturday from 07:30 to 5pm - $1500 (see page 1)
= 9.30 hours per day
= 26 working days permonth
= 240 hours for 1,500 usd ?
= 6 usd per hour
this would be 60% of the average teachers compensation, which is $10

HS hours are
LOL, I posted an acronym for high school, and it changed it to HE!
730-12
1-430
Usually finish teaching by 12
Saturday 8-12
Late one minute in the morning, get fined $1 ten minutes, $10 etc.
Was only aware of one guy who was getting $1500 and they actually reduced his salary whilst adding Saturday morning hours, LOL
Don't talk to the women, not even good morning.
The academic supervisor was a nice guy
