Private tutoring rates
Hello people of the forum. Happy new year and all.
A Taiwanese friend of mine recently found an english teacher, allegedly very good at her job,to assist his 5 year old son with his english 4 times a week for an hour and a half. The teacher is asking for 20 dollars an hour, which would be 30 for an hour and a half. He finds the rate a bit high but has no knowledge of how much the standard is. I would kindly appreciate your input.

She's a native speaker?
If so, I can't imagine her taking less than $15 per hour.

I'm paid $18-20 per hour to teach adults/high level English skills. I would expect less for a small child.
I came, I argued, I'm out

Cool. Good point.
I think $20 for the whole hour and a half session would be a good deal for both parties.

It depends on the teacher's experience, but private tutoring is hard work as the lessons need to be tailor-made for the student, and it's a lot more trouble than teaching a classroom of students as the private student requires full-on attention.doundoredo wrote:The teacher is asking for 20 dollars an hour, which would be 30 for an hour and a half. She should be able to charge more to teach kids because she's a woman.cambod wrote:Cool. Good point.

Well I have to say I never had a male teacher till I went to secondary (high) school, and I wish I had only had female teachers because the male ones were right violent bastards.

^ almost opposite of this for me. Three female teachers throughout my entire schooling. No issues.Lucky Lucan wrote:Well I have to say I never had a male teacher till I went to secondary (high) school, and I wish I had only had female teachers because the male ones were right violent bastards.

allegedly? Can you elaborate?doundoredo wrote:allegedly very good at her job
I don't think the rate is that high, the teacher might have to travel some distance, the lesson may be at an inconvenient time, etc.
For $18-20 I would expect a degree in education/PGCE and a lot of experience, and some measurable outcomes.

Thanks for all the input. The teacher has a DELTA and she s very good. Not a native speaker per se but fluent and very good with kids. My friend decided to pay the 30 and apparently he is very happy with her.

I don't think that is unreasonable. If the teacher is well qualified and good then 'You get what you pay for' in the end and only one and a half hours may no be as convenient working a whole day somewhere.
Nothing but an opinionated tourist. The Pope spends more time in countries than I do ! It is also not my place to comment on a gentleman's dress. A real 23 minute wonder, that obviously knows little about ovens and cooking in Cambodia.
