New to PP, looking for short-term/substitute jobs
New to PP, looking for short-term/substitute jobs
Hello,
I'm starting an ESL job in Taiwan towards the end of May and planning on staying in Phnom Penh until then. I'm getting nervous about draining what little savings I have and would really like to find some short-term or substitute work teaching.
Can anyone recommend an agency or job forum where I might be able to find these kind of arrangements? Or should I go handing out my resume to the schools asking for temp work?
FYI: I have a Bachelors degree and three years experience teaching ESL in Asia.
Thanks in adavance for any advice,
Matt

Never heard of any temp work here. No place will be interested unless you're prepared to commit yourself for a reasonable amount of time.

They have ESL in Asia? I thought it was all EFL.enclave1 wrote: teaching ESL in Asia.
Vlad, could you clarify this for us?
It's irrelevant.vladimir wrote: Dr. Vlad confirms: EFL.

Except that if he told someone who knew what they were doing at an interview that he was looking for an ESL post, immediate red flag.
Stick to accounting, you appear to know what you're doing with that. Not that I would know, however...

Haven't we already decided he's unlikely to get a job for a month anyway?vladimir wrote:Except that if he told someone who knew what they were doing at an interview that he was looking for an ESL post, immediate red flag.
What about in HK and Singapore? Is that ESL, EFL, or are you just a boring pedant?vladimir wrote:Acronym.
Dr. Vlad confirms: EFL.
He might get a few ESL students in Taiwan. Might.

I doubt he would find much lower-proficiency level EFL or ESL work in Singapore, it was British run for many years and the level of English is probably the highest in Asia.
I hope I'm not being a boring historian by revealing the secrets of Singapore to you.
Here's a freebie for you: Myanmar was also run by the British for a while. It was called Burma. Hope this helps.

The less things you're good at in life, the more important those few things are to you.
Sing has a whole heap of mainland Chinese living there now.
Plenty of well-paid work for teechurs with degree and DELTA.

@ GZ: I'll take your word for it.(not that I'd ever encourage anyone else to take your word on anything, just being generous today)
@RW, I think the OP is recently qualified and he didn't mention anything about a DELTA. Pretty sure someone with a DELTA would:
1) not be looking for work like this.
2) have mentioned it.
Singapore is an interesting case. The Chinese would normally be EFL students in their own country, but given the added exposure to English in Singapore, and the Chinese study ethic...I would predict very good results compared to, say, Cambodia, Thailand etc.
