The CELTA course
I'm thinking of completing the CELTA course in Thailand and was wondering whether anyone has experience of it there?
I did the basic online TEFL thing as a taster and enjoyed it (20hrs on site, 100 online), although obviously it's pretty worthless on its own so I figure the CELTA is the next step rather than just looking for work with just an online cert and blagging it.
I read it's pretty intense and you have to really put the effort in but is it doable without any prior experience?
Any advice?

Hi,
My girlfriend and I are taking the CELTA course in Chiang Mai in August. There is a course in July in Phuket. I think the website is showing that the August course is filling up. The CElta is a requirement to teach at ACE, which is one of the better schools in Cambodia (the best??) I am a teacher with 30 years experience (chemistry and math), but I am sure I will learn lots.
Let me know if you will be at the Chiang Mai course.
Pete

Every person I've met that has done it agree on the following: it's hard work, but if you commit for the duration, you will pass.mynameisphil wrote:I read it's pretty intense and you have to really put the effort in but is it doable without any prior experience?

I'm currently doing it here in London, it is intensive but achievable. My personal observation is that people with a recent history of degree level study are doing far better than others who have been out of full time education for years. Assuming your online course was recent, well structured and you were diligent. You should be primed and ready to go
Good Luck
Good Luck
@mynameisphil and anyone interested in taking Celta TEFL this is the pre-course task designed to give you a good idea of what it involves

Cheers, I downloaded the task from the IH Thailand site, seems easy enough as long as you put the effort in. It's nothing you can't read and brush up on really.
The TEFL course was the first bit of studying I'd undertaken for about 10 years and I didn't study at degree level so it was all new in a sense, but again it was easy enough as long as I set aside a few hours and committed myself.
Good luck with yours too mate!

I received my CELTA two years ago from IH Bangkok with a grade of B. Previous to that, I also got my Certificate in Introduction to TESOL (2 weeks) from ECC Teacher Training Centre. IH and ECC are the only training center that offer CELTA course.
ECC is okay but IH is much better when it comes to location and facilities. IH is just right in front of an MRT station.
My CELTA trainers at IH advised me not to get any jobs and just to concentrate on my training because they said that the training is rigorous and tedious. They are right. We had to submit homework/assignments two times a week. Added to that is the fact that most of my assignments were returned to me for revisions.
Being hard-headed, I got a part-time (weekend) ESL teaching job in a nearby English school. I had to resign after two weeks though because my assignments and preparations for my CELTA course were piling up.
We were around 20 trainees in our batch. I was the only Asian. Three out of 20 students didn't pass the course.
Best regards,

ILA in HCM, Vietnam also offer the CELTA course I believe if you don't fancy Bangkok but want to do it in the locale. They also offer the DELTA for teachers (they even pay for it if you work for them for X years after you complete it).

I have a CELTA from IH Bangkok. Ever since then, I have friends coming over wanting to go over all the material before they take theirs. When I decided to get my CELTA, I called just in time for the last spot in the class, bought a plane ticket that night and flew to Bangkok. I started class the next day. I didn't prepare, didn't know what to expect, all I knew is that it was going to be difficult and mentally exhausting.
Yes, it is true. It was not easy. Some of my lesson plans took anywhere from 4 to 8 hours to prepare. I understand their reasoning on why they want thoroughly thought out plans, but damn they were mind numbing.
Anyhow my question is: If someone who wants to take a CELTA wants some pre-CELTA training on what to expect from the class, am I allowed to charge them? For example, someone wants to know what to be prepared for, what each day consists of, what all the analysis sheets are, and what trainers look for, etc....
Or would CELTA not approve of such a thing. I can't see why I wouldn't be able to do pre CELTA training sessions, but maybe they have rules and terms against this.
I asked them this and never received a reply. What do you think?

Goodbye America, if anyone asks, say we were shipwrecked. Goodbye to your junk and your old hideola. Have a nice day.

Got my CELTA from IH Bangkok, but did the training on Phuket.
Good time - but iirc, 3 students didn't complete the course there, either. Lots of work.
All-in, no travel (digs on site), worth the extra $.

For just US$2,595 you receive not only your training and accommodation, but you are also catered for on a full-board basis 5 days a week. Trainee teachers are able to enjoy the wide range of both Thai and international dishes offered by the British International School refectory. There is even an option to purchase food at weekends if you like it that much. There is also a school shop that will cater for all your necessities - and the not quite so necessary munchies required during intensive periods of study!
As with all our packages you may of course decide to stay off site whilst taking the course, but if you can get a better deal than this - then it really would be Christmas!
Phuket Plus Package (included)
27 nights accommodation from the Sunday before the course starts to check out the Saturday after the course ends. Nice private rooms with private bathrooms and air conditioning.
Communal Lounge with Satellite TV, DVD player, pool table and table tennis table.
Wireless internet in the Halls of Residence.
8 internet linked computers in the Halls of Residence for late night study.
Desk in your room for when you want to study alone.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner on weekdays at the school refectory.
Tea and coffee at break times.
Drinking water.
Rooms serviced every day with regular changes of linen.

I think there is a fail quota to preserve their 'good name'.mynameisphil wrote:Were they obvious fails? Like could you see they weren't cut out for it or was it just general sub-standard assignments etc. Can't be good spending good money and then failing.
even if 10 Einsteins take the course, 3 must fail.

Not so. Of course some fail, that's the definition of having standards, but a fail quota is not in place. 2 failed when I did mine - one guy stopped coming after some of the materials he had literally spent the entire night making were deemed 'useless' by the trainer. The other was an Icelandic lady who, despite having a lot of teaching experience and very good classroom management and creativity, didn't really possess the necessary language skills. Neither could or should have passed. Of course it can be argued that the Icelandic lady should never have been on the course, but I don't know the details of what she was told or how much she insisted.
