Teachers at ISPP are paid to mark exams (of students of other schools and paid by the exam board per exam answer sheet) they are also paid for any after school clubs or activities.vladimir wrote:I think if people are advertising for teachers with less experience etc, they need to post detailed stuff. I doubt ISPP needs to post something like this, their teachers are highly qualified and know exactly what is required.
I remember an English guy at Western years back whinging that he had to mark exams and that wasn't in his job description, that he should get paid extra for that.

Didn't apply to me when I taught in PNH. I was on a decent monthly salary with good annual holidays and paid public holidays...SCC wrote:I really can't see why anyone with qualifications or a brain would work as an English teacher in PP, apart from a few jobs that pay $20 p h inc holidays. There are just far too many holidays here to earn such a pittance. (approx $2 p h if you add in homework, exam marking and holidays) which is why so many low end teachers work every work day and still have no money to pay for visas.

His point is still valid though. There are some good numbers about at one or two of the language centres, but unless you have one of the few salaried positions with benefits such as health insurance, flights, and accommodation on arrival, PP's probably not a great option for an experienced EFL teacher with good qualifications.Falcon Randwick wrote:Didn't apply to me when I taught in PNH. Yes, but you do understand that a teacher at Western is possibly slightly less qualified that one at ISPP, right?Rama wrote:Teachers at ISPP are paid to mark exams (of students of other schools and paid by the exam board per exam answer sheet) they are also paid for any after school clubs or activities.vladimir wrote:I think if people are advertising for teachers with less experience etc, they need to post detailed stuff. In addition, I think teachers at ISPP are grading IB/Cambridge IGCSE candidate papers, to compare the two/suggest teachers at Western get the same is a bit...how shall I say?
I don't think Western is even WASC accredited yet.

Trolls are like Slinkys - good for nothing but fun to watch when you push them down a flight of stairs.

But the unqualified, inexperienced, half arsed teachers at Western are being paid ($10) by the hour...they may feel like they are entitled to be paid by the hour. If it takes 2 hours to mark a load of exam papers perhaps they should be paid for 2 hours work?
The little school I've just accepted a half day job at ($12 an hour! Whoopee!) Will give me 2 hours of paid prep time per week for planning and marking. And pay when I attend parents meetings by the hour.
Unusual, but good practice & appreciated by me.

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. The Brit in question was on a salary. But yes, most places don't pay for prep, you are lucky.Rama wrote:I hear you vladimir.
