Enough is Enough?
Enough is Enough?
I’m hoping I have enough qualifications to find a decent position in Cambodia teaching English to adults. I have a BS in Biology/Chemistry, MA in Education with an ESL Endorsement, 28 years teaching experience at the middle school level with ELL students, and one summer of teaching English in Vietnam. I’m a translator (Spanish) at my school for meetings and phone calls, and I’ve taken many language courses myself as an adult so I’m familiar with the process. I’m hoping what I already have will take the place of a CELTA/TEFL, etc.. Any opinions or advice on what more I need or where to look for employment would be appreciated, I’ll be relocating to Cambodia in June/July.
In my opinion, your credentials and experience are far above the average "teacher's" in Cambodia, though it's possible you will still run into some short-sighted administrators squawking, "CELTA? I don't see a CELTA?"
Of greater concern is whether you will actually find an open position worthy of your skills. Teachers certified and experienced in Western countries can get very good salaries at "real" schools here that recruit internationally, are IB-certified, and charge tuition upwards of $20,000/year - though not teaching English (I don't think). A step below that are the handful of reliable, contracted English-teaching positions that come with competitive salaries and benefits like PTO and insurance, but institutions that offer those kinds of benefits rather than breathe down your neck and pinch every unpaid hour are the exception.
Below that, you're competing with basically every white face who has a Bachelor's degree and a TEFL cert for positions with relatively little stability and high turnover. :/

Apply to Northbridge/ISPP/ACE might pull the CELTA snob act on you.CBO wrote:I’m hoping I have enough qualifications to find a decent position in Cambodia teaching English to adults. Sorry to say it, but your Spanish will probably be meaningless, hombre.

Thanks for the replies, I'll look into that information. I'm planning to do an early retirement at the end of this school year, and so will have to wait two years for my pension to kick in. I might have enough savings to get me through, but I'm looking into teaching just to supplement my income during that time. I already sold the house and cleaned up loose ends, everything's falling into place and I'm ready to go! Thanks again.
