My advice is get a gig at a decent language school for 3 months to pay the bills, advertise in Khmer/English papers and network Koreans and Japanese.
What I'm going to do when I retire.
Are there language schools where I can teach English 1-to-1?
How could you possibly get this out of what I wrote? I rated rural Japan considerably higher that Osaka or Tokyo based on salary relative to cost of living.chodeinthebode wrote: You say the cost of living in rural Japan costs more than living in Tokyo or Osaka? How is that possible...these cities are really expensive!
I heard it is possible to teach English at cram schools in Taiwan called Buxiban without a degree? Could you verify this for me?

Why anyone would choose to teach one-to-one is beyond me. It pays more, but it's a whole lot more hassle.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Keeping in mind that my teaching experience consisted of a grand total of 3 classes plus a bit of substitute work, I found 1-1 for adults much easier than groups. I never taught kids 1-1 so I'm not sure about that.

Yes, this is a good idea. I have heard that a lot of Korean and Japanese people live or study in Cambodia?vladimir wrote:My advice is get a gig at a decent language school for 3 months to pay the bills, advertise in Khmer/English papers and network Koreans and Japanese.

I find 1-1 a lot easier because they actually want to learn English and they are serious. Most children in classes don't want to be there and trying to keep a classroom full of children in control was always the bigger hassle for me. The big hassle with 1-1 is that you get students that flake out a lot, but in China and Japan, this wouldn't happen that often. The students that didn't flake would always show up early and even offered me food or a coffee if say we met at a Starbuck's or some other cafe. Are Cambodians known for being flaky?Buscador wrote:Keeping in mind that my teaching experience consisted of a grand total of 3 classes plus a bit of substitute work, I found 1-1 for adults much easier than groups. I work privately ...I charge 35 USD per hour as an absolute minimum. I turn away at least 3 students per week because I have no free time. I do not want to work more than 15 hours per week. There is lots of private work out there...but you need to good at what you do.

Well you mentioned "out there". I take it that you are not currently in Cambodia? Did you leave because it is difficult to make a living out there or for other reasons? Maybe went to a country that pays more?crackers wrote:I work privately ...I charge 35 USD per hour as an absolute minimum. I turn away at least 3 students per week because I have no free time. Sounds like a good thing you had going out there. I have a lot of experience teaching and tutoring privately as well, so I would like to think I'm pretty good at what I do. Of course, there is always room for improvement. Were you able to post ads on newspapers and around the city or make business cards to pass out/leave on people's car windshields, front doors/ etc? Is this type of advertising for private teaching legal? I did this in China and Japan all the time when I was gathering private students. If many Cambodians don't read books...I highly doubt many are checking out websites online where they can find a private English tutor...or am I wrong about this?
