Hi,
I'm a certified teacher with 30 years experience (science and math in Canada), a masters degree, and I've recently received my CULTA . . . uh, I mean CELTA certification. I am currently filling in at an Elementary school in Thailand. On about Nov1 (possibly a bit earlier) I will be "free" to take on another job. The problem is that I will only be able to commit to a job until about Christmas. Then it is back home to teach my darling high school students.
Ideally I would like to teach adults either in classes or one-on-one. I want to put my CELTA training to use before I forget everything.
Any suggestions on where I might best find a decent short-term English language gig? As I only have 6-8 weeks, I don't want to spend a lot of time pounding the pavement, but maybe that is what I will need to do?? I haven't ever been to Vietnam, so that is interesting. I also hear Korea is a great place for teaching English.
Any insights from this venerable collection of Sages will be much appreciated.
Pete

I was going to recommend a certain school where no one has lasted longer than 4 weeks, but my .999/oz of decency forbids me.
6 weeks? Seriously, what is the point?

Hi
I was hoping that someone might need a "fill in" for a couple of weeks while they make a quick trip back home - 6 weeks or so. This is what I am doing now in Thailand.
The reason I WANT to work is so I can put into practice some of the stuff I learned in my CELTA course (love it or hate it, CELTA does introduce a lot of good ideas and strategies). The elementary school I am at here requires a different skill set (primarily behavior control I thought I heard Thai students are so respectful and compliant???)
I also would like to "try out" different teaching venues.
Sooooo . . . again, if anyone knows of a fitting opportunity, please let me know.
Pete

I seriously doubt you will get offered anything.
Schools replace rather than substitute.
If it were July (summer school) you may have had more luck.

How does what you want to do help the students? If you want to help yourself, volunteer at an orphanage; don't take money off kids annd their families.
I came, I argued, I'm out
I would be helping students by providing educationally sound lessons while their regular teacher is away. I hope that is what I am doing now here in Thailand. If I'm not, then I better find a different career (not inflict my ineptitude on kids in an orphanage!)andyinasia wrote:How does what you want to do help the students? I'm surprised this is such a contentious post

I know where you can go and get paid $20 an hour and at least 10 hours a week if not much more. I have to tell you how to do it, but it is in North Vietnam in Haiphong. My girl worked there. Anyhow, PM me if you want to know. North Vietnam is much different from South Vietnam or even Central, but you can get a hell of deal on hotels there. Do not attempt to rent. They will fine you because either you or your landlord screwed it up.
Setback is: it is young kids in the 6 -15 range, I think. Easy to do as I watched her. As in simple. Teach 4 words and play some games.
I'm in a real good mood today.
PM me and I will supply you info. Better be sure you want to go to Haiphong. It is a quiet city and main seaport with an airport with very cheap flights to HCMC for $50 one way. Book Jetstar for best deal.
By the way (notice the weejieness) tell them when you will be leaving, but they will not believe shit. Best way is to tell them you are probably coming back. Do it in advance of working and ........... like I said, PM me.
Murphy trying to not be BCW, but I am.
