Cambodian Universities Ranked
http://www.webometrics.info/en/asia/cambodia
Make of it what you will, add in your chosen provisos and caveats and so on. Some surprises - eg some universities unexpectedly low on the list. The best university in Cambodia is RUPP, which is outside the top 5000 in the world. I noticed that in Asia alone, 5th placed Pannasastra just creeps into the top 4000, or outside the top 500 for SE Asia.

That's good stuff to play analysis with but a quick look through the methodology indicates that it doesn't accurately represent the quality of education of the universities. Instead it seems to be highly influenced by the unversities' web accessibility of data.
But that's a way to look at it.
In my experience of recruiting and working with my staff, I noted that students from RULE, BBU, Norton and UC (and almost all doubled with an IFL degree) usually made the cut.

That's interesting to know. Some universities have made great efforts to improve their standards over the last few years, and some have rested on their laurels and thrown away their advantages.Joon wrote: In my experience of recruiting and working with my staff, I noted that students from RULE, BBU, Norton and UC (and almost all doubled with an IFL degree) usually made the cut.
I checked the #4 unis website and it's atrocious, so I'm sure interwebby access is only a small part of the whole assessment.
This year's ranks only came out this evening and I haven't had a chance to analyse it, but previous years ranking of US and UK unis have been pretty bang on, to my memory.

A farce. Quelle suprise.
You pays your money, and you makes your choice.
My list would be:
1. IFL
2. UC
3. LKW
4. PUC (Academic Programme Only)
Interesting that Western didn't even make the grade.
ירי ילדים והפצצת אזרחים דורש אומץ, כמו גם הטרדה מינית של עובדי ההוראה.
Kansas State university (100th US, 267th in the world ... ) ranked ahead of all French or Belgian universities ? Gimme a break.
I'm not disputing the results for Cambodia though. Interesting to sort out those dwarves among midgets.

I'd agree, a cursory look at the site's methodology raises huge questions about what any of the rankings represent at all. RUPP is a well-respected university and probably deserves its top placement. However, for example, Build Bright is at #8 . They were involved in a scandal due to their partnership with a completely fake Irish university a few years back.Joon wrote:That's good stuff to play analysis with but a quick look through the methodology indicates that it doesn't accurately represent the quality of education of the universities. Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Thanks for the link, AiA.andyinasia wrote:

yes, e.g. LSE or Imperial College outside of the top 10 in the U.K.
Or Yale at # 15 in the U.S.
Or Princeton at # 23
Or Caltech at # 26
Or universities unexpectedly high on the list
e.g. who has ever heard of this Panha Chiet (Shit?) University at # 3
or Open University in the U.K. at # 5
or University of Glasgow at #6
or University of Washington in the U.S. at # 7

There was another recent ratings guide published in the Guardian which had the top 5 as Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, Harvard University and University of Oxford.
http://www.theguardian.com/education/20 ... iversities
According to The Graun, the QS Survey is "the most rigorous of its type," so more reliable, perhaps.

Yeh but that one only covers the top 800. The one I posted is the only one I know that goes so far down it reaches Cambodia.erictheking wrote:There was another recent ratings guide published in the Guardian which had the top 5 as Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, Harvard University and University of Oxford.

I also posted a screengrab of the top 10 on the Harvard thread, where some discussion of the different tables is emerging.

There are a couple of Thai unis in the top 2/300 of the one above- hope for the future in Cambodia's case.

The best Cambodian uni (RUPP/IFL) is outside the top 500, and after that you're looking past the first 10,000. From my observations/involvement in the tertiary sector here, I'd say that's not inaccurate. The future is a long way away.erictheking wrote:andyinasia wrote:The one I posted is the only one I know that goes so far down it reaches Cambodia.erictheking wrote:There was another recent ratings guide published in the Guardian which had the top 5 as Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, Harvard University and University of Oxford.

To be honest, when I came here the notion of preparing elite students to leave Cambodia and study in a developed country was only something I'd entertain if I was confident they'd return to help their nation. I dropped that principle a long time ago.

I know far lessa bout universities than Andy, but the two things that surprise me are how low RULE ranked (for Cambodia, not world wide) and that Joon has had good experiences with people from Norton. The ones I have interviewed from there seemed to have learned absolutely nothing. I remember one gorl who got a degree in Computer Science without ever having actually run a program she wrote on a computer.

Well, there are very few checks on the degree process in reality. Loads of meaningless paperwork, but basically, give them the money and get your degree. Add teachers who went through the same system in many cases, and a no-fail policy and incompetent admin, and what do you get?
I know personally of a case where a student was going to fail because he had not done his practicum, and he walked into the vice-rector's office with a pistol in his waistband and offered to pay his way out of it.
Part of the problem is also the motivation that some owners have when they start a university.

That might be due to what candidates we were looking for. I was looking for graduates in economy, development, management, finance, and such. Also a lot of CVs from those uni didn't make the cut. But the hard-working, smart ones were good enough for what I needed.Buscador wrote:I know far lessa bout universities than Andy, but the two things that surprise me are how low RULE ranked (for Cambodia, not world wide) and that Joon has had good experiences with people from Norton.
