Says the expert who only associates with Khmers who barely finished their primary school educationgavinmac wrote:And the students will stop riding motos and fly to school on their unicorns.andyinasia wrote: It will change, and here's why: we're at a point in time where a sizable middle class market has emerged, and sufficient parents both desire and can afford quality education. The old days of cheating your way through the system to end up with a worthless piece of paper is rapidly passing amongst those more enlightened families. Market forces will create a two-tier system, with a spate of genuinely good international-standard schools emerging that have real international accreditation, proper management and good quality staff. The badly-managed school run by old-time greedy owners will become B-stream or sink schools. The good schools will attract the best teachers - with decent salaries of course, and the sink schools will keep hiring $10 ph 'old-school' teflers.
Let me dumb it down for you; time was, the key question parents asked before enrolling their precious one in a private school was "Does the teacher have a white face?". This is becoming rarer now and more and more parents are asking tough questions about curricula and accreditation, even at kindergarten level. Schools are having to up their games.
I came, I argued, I'm out

I don't understand why you would think that? Many teachers ( and online workers) only moved to Cambodia because of visa problems in Thailand.erictheking wrote:Thailand.UKJ wrote:Name an Asian country with a worse reputation for English teachers?vladimir wrote:I think I'll go with andy's analysis, since his actually a teacher and knows what he's talking about.

No decent teacher would ever look down on another teacher on the basis if qualifications. It reveals insecurity and is totally unprofessional.
if they lied about their qualifications or behaved badly, fair game.
@ andy: Most critics on here have never taught a single day in their lives, but they have to target someone/ something to make themselves feel better.

Visa problems? Unscrupulous Thai employers have been bending these rules for years, thus ensuring that the cheapest (and preferably youngest) white faces were able to find work of some sort, irrespective of ability. The fact that the government has finally started to crack down a little is neither a ringing endorsement of the jetsam and flotsam attracted to Thailand, nor evidence of a next door neighbour where standards are any lower.UKJ wrote:I don't understand why you would think that? Overall, you'll find standards similar in both countries: there are good schools and bad schools in both. The key difference is that Thailand has earned its reputation for cutting corners on a much larger scale and over a much longer period of time.
Standards must be lower, if you don't need as many qualifications in Cambodia , compared to Thailand, and the visas are easier. It's really a non argument bud.erictheking wrote:Visa problems? Another newbie from Thailand here. Been here 3 weeks now. Got an unfurnished place for $120 a month about 2km from Wat Phnom. Spent around $600 fitting it out with the basics (bed, fridge, TV etc) ... bugger paying $250 a month for a furnished place. Why pay for the same furniture month after month? One big payout at the start is much cheaper in the long run. Got a second hand moto for $600 (plate & I.D).
Found a good job after two days. $18 per hour. Only 10 hours a week so far but they say it will increase if I stay.
Doesn't seem "over saturated" so far. Actually knocked a few offers back. Stats for me: 50 y.o, 10 years experience, degree, TESOL.
Oh...and a big thanks to khymer24.com for the apartment and moto.
