teaching english in cambodia info please
hey i wanted to try teaching english there. i was wondering from expats themselves how the exoperience is, what the pay is like, and what tqualifications i would need to do so??? Also would i be needing to show my college diploma and how easy is it to find a job? thanks
This has got to be a windup right? I'd start by being able to use the Queen's wonderful language to begin with - let me assist briefly:
+ Start sentences with a capital letter.
+ English - the 'e' should be capitalised.
+ Cambodia - the 'c' should be capitalised.
+ 'i' should be capitalised.
+ Run a spell check from time to time, it will catch out things like ' exoperience' and 'tqualifications'.
+ Use of multiple punctuation marks in succession such as !!! or ??? is something that your Old Etonian masters should have beaten out of you a long time ago.
+ Don't get me started on the virtues of "would I be needing to"
+ Vlad (and this pains me to say), speaketh the truth!
Sorry for being a grammar Nazi, just couldn't resist this once - taking one for the TEFL team to whom I do not belong!

^ Glad you made the effort. Lazy posts like the OP piss real teachers like Vlad and me right off.
OP - it's easy if you make the effort, so in your case you have no chance.

Do most fraudulent teachers in Cambodia get fake diplomas or do they just list on their C.V.s that they have graduated from schools they never attended?
In the US people rarely present copies of diplomas to get a job, you just list where you went and then some employers may verify it and some won't.
I used to work for a company that would only verify the educational credentials of people in managerial positions. For lower level employees, there was no verification.
What would happen from time to time would be that someone would get hired in a lower level job, they'd work for the company for a number of years, do a good job, then they'd get promoted to manager. But the promotion would trigger a background check, which would show that they lied on their C.V. and job application five years ago, because they never actually graduated from the university they attended, or something like that. Their promotion would then become a firing.

My father worked as the managing editor for the National Enquirer in the late 80s and early 90s, and then as a programmer in the 90s/00s without ever finishing his college degree (which was french, a language he never learned to speak). I remember he was always worried that he was going to be discovered, but it never happened. I also don't have a college degree, but have never lied about it. It would worry me too much.gavinmac wrote:Do most fraudulent teachers in Cambodia get fake diplomas or do they just list on their C.V.s that they have graduated from schools they never attended?

I agree upon that as well. Even here in the Far East, you'd be better off just sticking to the truth in the long run, or chance is the past might just catch up on you. I am sure if allowed, most employers could verify a diploma with the institution it was issued by.

Do you think it's fair on the students to have a teacher with no qualifications or experience? Why should they pay you?

fact is, for most teacher jobs you will need a degree and with increasing competition those without one will need to lie.
what else should the guys, coming from some construction job do when they want to earn some money here?
its even excusable when they lie, as there is really zilch need to have a university degree to work as an English teacher here.
for other subjects, as e.g. science, it might be another thing...
somewhere it was said, you can get splendid diplomas on khao san (Bangkok).
