Reliable source told me yesterday that Indonesian schools will be implementing a state requirement soon that all teachers will be required to have a minimum of a master's degree in a relevant subject.
Guess where many will then head?
Has anyone else heard anything about this? FR?
Expect an influx

A well informed source of mine also told me the same thing (Phnom Penh Post, page 8).

The Indonesian government has also banned the sale of beer at minmarts.
It sounds like exodus time.

Shit is (continuing) to get weird in Indonesia. beer is banned from some minimarts, but not all. I have no idea why that might be. It's banned from Alfamart but not Indomaret, one can only imagine that certain wheelbarrow loads of green paperwork has changed hands. That said, I'm talking about beer being stopped for sale in Medan, when I went to Yogyakarta at Xmas, it was already being implemented with Circle K minimarts being an exception to that rule.
As for the new teaching rules, as far as I'm aware, you don't need a Masters degree, but you do need a first degree in English, English Literature, Linguistics or Teaching English. The weird new rules being enforced are with regard to providing a clean drug test AND a HIV certificate, with the bizarre proviso that these must be conducted in the applicant's home country, though I have heard of a case where the KITAS applicant was allowed to have these tests done in Singapore. Apparently the Education department doesn't trust Indonesian doctors to not be corrupt.
My wife says that the new Minister for Education is notoriously anti-foreigner. The place is already fucked and getting fuckeder. Thankfully I'm bailing to Oz in July, maybe sooner as I'm supposed to renew my KITAS at the end of April and my contract is supposed to finish on June 20th. I've already spoken to school management about them buying me out of my contract at the end of April. Mmm, two months free salary...

Oh yeah, and if you were thinking of applying for the job I'm vacating, you might want to read this...

Hiya, it's me, the cat lady...
Think it was likely that the immigration bods in Jakarta were scaremongering, probably in a bid to get another astronomical consultation fee from my employer in the future - now that everything's 'above board' they have to find more inventive ways of making money...
Reckon it'll probably still just be a degree - they require a transcript now, not just a copy - but their reasoning was that Indonesian teachers need a masters to teach here, so foreigners should be qualified to the same degree... I kinda agree, up to a point. I think teachers should be suitably qualified to teach the national curriculum, but similar qualifications to work in a two-bit operation like EF would be overkill to say the least...
On the drug/HIV test, we've just had 2 newbies in and the immigration office has said that their tests can be done here in town. Whether that's down to another change in procedure or a 'fee' being paid, I dunno...
On the beer thing, Falcon, apparently the powers that be are reclassifying it so that beer be treated the same as wine and spirits, and as such a licence required to sell it. The licence is reet expensive by all accounts, so many places are pulling it. I heard there's a lot of opposition to these changes, and I don't think it's set in stone yet, but I think Alfamart are possibly withdrawing beer in anticipation of this going through, Indomaret and most other places are still ok here in Semarang at the moment. We get ours delivered by the crate from a distributor and end up paying half the price of a bottle in bloody Alfamart anyway!

What is a degree in English language? The university I went to only ever offered the literature option. I've never heard of anyone studying 'English' as a major, normally when they say 'BA English' they mean literature.D.Sanchez wrote:thats really piss-ant to the numbers who r leaving china

Universities in the US offer just plain English as a major. There are usually a few core courses you have to take (lit, poetry, creative writing, communications, etc.) If you want to pursue an MA you typically must choose one of the core subject to be your concentration, which is the bulk of the courses you will take at that level.vladimir wrote:What is a degree in English language? Just wait until this whole ASEAN thing kicks off. The whole region will be inundated with Philippine workers who will undercut everyone. The only place left to get work in Asia will be The Philippines.

Thanks, Pecahead, interesting. I thought perhaps he was referring to a grammar-based degree.Pecahead wrote:Universities in the US offer just plain English as a major. I think the agreement will trigger many changes. Funny how when this was said 6 months ago, folk just laughed at it.
Nothing but an opinionated tourist. The Pope spends more time in countries than I do ! It is also not my place to comment on a gentleman's dress. A real 23 minute wonder, that obviously knows little about ovens and cooking in Cambodia.
