ESOL Teaching Sector March 2015 Update
I have recently arrived from China.
Me: Years of experience in China, degree, CELTA, middle aged, grey thinning hair.
Short Executive Summary of Phnom Penh ESL Industry:
-Bring $4,000-$6,000 USD after airfare [I know. If you had that much money...].
-Expect to be looking for work for 6 months.
-Better be under 30. Females only hired for the youngest learners in most places.
-They want degrees and CELTA now.
-$600 a month to live. $100 for a local style small room, $500 for water, tuk-tuks, sundry, various and food.
-They want you to have an existing job here to reference.
Pay? $350 to $500 a month. Everyone I run into and talk with is unaware of this, they are too busy working and have a position that pays better. But for anyone new, expect a much lower salary structure. Millions of unemployed EU, UK, USA and CA twenty somethings with student debt and a degree and more hair than me and arriving every day. I see 3 or 4 prospective teachers every day running off photocopies of their certs.
In addition China is running people out of the country and now demands a degree, but living conditions are the poorest at best. Pollution, etc. Those teachers are showing up here.
Basically everything you see at any online ESL site about teaching in Cambodia is now out of date. You won't earn $900 a month, you cannot just show up and get a job in a week, and expenses are rising so that finding an apartment for less than $200/mo is now not likely. Market is saturated and you better bring your A game and hustle, big time.
If any of you have places to meet up for me to talk with other teachers, network and find out about jobs, please do let on.
If you run into a Smile to grab some smokes and a guy starts a conversation with you, that's probably me.
Good Luck to any fresh arrivals!
Best,
PPA

$350 per month? It's obvious that the English teaching wages going forward will be moving inversely with the cost of living but I don't think it's already dropped to that level.

The quality jobs are in curriculum now, there's no doubt about that. It's more rewarding to teach subjects, and the legitimate international schools will pay for your visa, WP, stipend for healthcare and flight allowance. I know this firsthand.
EFL is a joke in Cambodia, and $900 seems low but within the average. $350-500 I'm assuming is part-time. Most English mills in PP will pay $10-12 to start, and even if you have a full-load of 25 hrs/week you always have to take into account the holidays and costs for visas and stuff so those new to the circuit should anticipate needing to work two jobs to make it work. You do not need a CELTA to teach here. As far as I know, the only language school which requires that is ACE, although obviously a CELTA will open up more opportunities for you here and in the world.
There are also countless other problems associated with the for-profit education industry. Read here: http://www.khmer440.com/k/2014/05/we-do ... -here-but/

Is it just me, or is a bit odd to have a poster with no experience of teaching in Cambodia telling us long-termers how it really is? Not asking, telling. He doesn't post in the 'staff room' forum to engage with other teachers; he posts in the 'Speakeasy' to tell non-teachers how it really is. Well if that works for you, carry on!

I'm not even looking for more hours and they keep getting offered to me by various schools and businesses, perhaps you need a pony tail mate.
k440, something to do when you're pissed.

I merely post what was on an HRInc advert for Foreign Teachers for Stamford International Academy.GMJS-440 wrote:$350 per month? It's obvious that the English teaching wages going forward will be moving inversely with the cost of living but I don't think it's already dropped to that level.

ELT and Westline are offering 1 or 2 classes per week, ran into two other teachers plying their trade who encountered the exact same story.
This is what was told to us from ELT and Westline.
If any of you know of a place that is hiring full-time contact hours as $10 USD per hour or greater, I will meet up and buy you a beer and a burger.

I post my experience pounding the pavement this week. This is real and happened to me this week.andyinasia wrote:Is it just me, or is a bit odd to have a poster with no experience of teaching in Cambodia telling us long-termers how it really is? I would be more than happy to tell you the identical content, in person and face to face.
Pick a time and place. More than happy to tell you this verbally.

No time. Not interested. Too much teaching work to do.

The EFL scene in Cambodia has not changed dramatically in the course of the last few months. The schools that the OP has mentioned are bottom of the rung factory schools that no one who has been in Cambodia for more than a few weeks would even consider working at, unless in possession of a Nigerian passport - and even then only at a push. The OP may think he's been pounding the pavement, but it sounds more like he's been running around like a headless chicken.
Rather than adopting the pseudo-hardman "Í'll tell you to your face (that I'm a cock)" stance, why not ask some questions and I am sure the longtermers will be happy to point you in the right direction.

Unaccustomed, as I am to agreeing with AiA, you could do a lot worse and save a lot of shoe leather by asking him, Vlad and a few other Tefltimers for their advice. They and a few more regulars here actually have gigs paying much more than you currently aspire to.
Good Luck
Good Luck
Nothing but an opinionated tourist. The Pope spends more time in countries than I do ! It is also not my place to comment on a gentleman's dress. A real 23 minute wonder, that obviously knows little about ovens and cooking in Cambodia.

Ok long termers, where should I apply so that I will be gainfully employed within a week at $1200 USD per month or more?Teach-er wrote:The EFL scene in Cambodia has not changed dramatically in the course of the last few months.
