You will never be viewed the same as a white person. Sorry.sen wrote:You've misunderstood me, I'm still open to staying here if I am seen as a desirable candidate as much as anybody else. If I can't be seen in the same light as other prospective candidates purely because of my ethnicity, then that's not something I can withstand. I don't want to be pitied or anything like that. I just want to feel just as worthy as anybody else. If there are genuine work opportunities that are open to everybody and I apply, I want to feel like I can get them because I possess the right skill-sets and have the right motivations. I'm honestly not looking for favours, that wouldn't change anything. I hope that makes sense.

Anyone who doesn't like Capitalism is a pathetic loser. God bless the USA and no place else.

Sound's great, would definitely like to check all that out sometime. Kissing three times on the cheek sounds a bit more useful than nodding at each other. As for getting some gainful employment here, don't give up too soon. It can take a while.sen wrote:Oh, wow! you do? Hearing that makes my heart sing. It's a very beautiful and quaint city that's big on cafe culture. The architecture is great yes, as the local beer (Asmara beer), it's a little bit like Peroni but only better in my opinion. Yes, it's notoriously difficult for people to get a visa, I wouldn't even be allowed in without my ID card. But if you show a genuine interest in the food, coffee, history, culture and architecture in that order they'd definitely process the visa. The only thing is you'd have to send your passport to China for a good 6 wks to get it sorted.
If you haven't tried the food, you definitely should. There's nothing like it outside of Eritrea and Ethiopia, accept ours is a lot better because it's not laden with ghee so it's a bit lighter and features more seafood. But generally speaking they're not so keen on seafood as a whole so much. The tea is also very distinct as it's infused with spices. It's usually drank during the day. Coffee is a ceremonious affair that's usually served after 4 pm, you need to confirm whether you can stick around for an 1.30 hr though as you need to have 3 cups before you can go. You'll usually be asked do you have time for coffee? If it's a no, tea is served up, this is becuase it's bad luck to leave before 3 cups have been drunken. The reason it takes so long is because the beans are roasted, grinded and brewed right in front of you. This is NEVER done by a man!!!! Men and women interact very differently out there too. Excessive eye-contact is generally frowned upon between men and women, as is touching beyond 3 kisses on the cheeks. Handshakes generally linger for a couple of minutes and the man's hand is ALWAYS above. They're also very loose and limp handshakes, otherwise it may be viewed as some sign of aggression or desire to dominate the other party. What else can I say, the people are generally very humble so humility is very much respected. The women are very beautiful, modest and shy. If you do go your visa will be limited to like 3 provinces, so make sure you stay within those zones. Don't ever take pictures of public buildings or officers. Don't defame the government and refrain from voicing any political views on anything!!! Also don't litter in public spaces, littering is completely frowned upon. When you eat, if somebody wants to hand-feed you, don't ever say no. It's a sign acceptance and appreciation. Try the food and coffee and show you know a thing or two about the culture and the cultural customs and you should be alright with getting the visa. Just note, you have to send it off to China though. Hope this info helps.
And yes I know I should refrain from stating too much when asked where from, it just causes confusion. Thanks for the advice.

Eye contact? Lingering handshakes? Kissing on the cheek?
Forget it, I'm out.

Sadly, race is most certainly a factor. A drunken Dutchman or Slav will get a higher wage than an educated native English speaker with black or brown skin.
