Out of curiosity, do you teachers bother trying to teach students not to answer English questions "Do you have this?" with the one word answer "Have."?
I mean, I know in Khmer they would just say "mien," but in English the only good affirmative answers are "Yes," "Yes, I do" or "Yes, I have that."
Is it too much to expect Khmers not to answer questions with "Have" or other one word sentences repeating the verb from the question? Do they eventually learn this in super advanced classes after years of study?

I don't find it annoying at all. I think it's fantastic that they are even slightly bi lingual, considering their education system. They put many westerners to shame.gavinmac wrote:Out of curiosity, do you teachers bother trying to teach students not to answer English questions "Do you have this?" with the one word answer "Have."?

Can't recall a single student using that reply in the 8 months I've been teaching here. Would I correct them.....DOH!

To be fair I tend to hear the word "no have" more often than have... even when said item requested is right under their nose...
I remember trying to order a cheese toastie once, but they only had ham and cheese toasties on the menu, when asked if they just had cheese I was told "no have"... I later learned it wasn't because they couldn't make it; it was because they didn't know how to charge for it.
