I am hunting for a some decent science books for my elementary school aged ESL students. I have yet to find a decent text or series of texts for teaching students who are learning the language. My last two school used some MacMillan books that we totally uninteresting and and used vocabulary well beyond the understanding of the kids.
Does anybody know of any good books? They don't have to be text books - any book book with interesting science concepts and simple language would be very helpful.
Thanks
Any good science textbooks for young ESL students?
Have a look at The Nuffield Primary Science textbooks. Here for 5-7 year olds http://www.nationalstemcentre.org.uk/el ... r-ages-5-7 & here for 7-12 year olds http://www.nationalstemcentre.org.uk/el ... -ages-7-12
They were/are based on the UK national curriculum science subjects, but have gone out of print and are now therfore free to download and use. English level could be a bit high still, but they're quite well designed and they're free.

I had a similar problem for my low budget school. I bodged together some books using this http://www.mrcollinson.ca.
Is it perfect? No. Is it the best considering the circumstances? Maybe.
Anyway, take a look.

Try the Cambridge Interactive series. Most ESL/EFL textbooks have elements of CLIL these days and Interactive is ok for upper primary.jeffmagic wrote:I am hunting for a some decent science books for my elementary school aged ESL students. Not focussed solely on science, mind.
Try Carol Warderman (or was it Worderman) Science Made Easy series. They're designed for home use but cover British curriculum subjects and have a detachable answer key. They're black and white workbooks though, so you have to make the effort to teach the topic otherwise - but ideally science isn't something you read from books anyway. Much more useful to make the kids write their own of the observations of experiments, with explanations.
