ELT -The latest
Is it required you take Ice before showing up to work or is it just done voluntarily by most of the teachers?

I remember going to an interview in the Tuol Kork branch. The impeccably dressed camp commandant was sitting at a raised desk on a platform looking down at me. He proceeded to fire a lot of HR questions at me and we got stuck on 'How long are you intending to stay in Cambodia?'. I said at least a year and he just kept silent. I was wondering what he wanted me to say and to be frank was getting quite pissed off at this interview, never having had to go through a Western style interview process for a crap education mill job before. I told him ' Well, I might leave before the next elections as I think there could be trouble'. I saw his CPP, MP face drop. Needles to say, I didn't get invited back for a second interview. Nice building and sexy apple macs on the front desk. Shame about the managers. Same old same old.

Hang in there, you'll be fine and moving onward and upward in no time.
One piece of advice, if you have a bad back, don't ask Horace how to medicate it.

k440, something to do when you're pissed.
Mr c, a proper puddle jumper on a power trip. He hired one of the most obvious kiddie fiddlers in asia (now in vn) and his antipodean 'friend', who also had more than a touch of the lavender about him, who would dress impeccably, but also like to take teenage male students out for dinner on the weekend, which other staff found a bit, erm, odd.
Another bogtrotting friend of mine working there once asked me in his broad Meath brogue 'wassa a voorb again?'.
Notice the macs are merely screens for show, and the upstairs resembles a gulag.

I saw no mention of such a requirement in the contract, and none of the teachers seem especially twitchy or itchy.GMJS-440 wrote:Is it required you take Ice before showing up to work or is it just done voluntarily by most of the teachers?
Thanks, but it's a start. I'm happy to be working and teaching, and look forward to putting in my time and moving on to bigger and better things when the time is right and the opportunity arises.Petrol Head wrote:What complete bullshit. You've got my sincere sympathies OP.
Not yet. I might get a little shirty if that happens.ziggy1001 wrote:So no salary docked yet as a "voluntary" contribution to charity?
There is a certain, uh, disparity in the public and private areas of the school, yes. But the rooms are well-lit, the aircon works, and there are enough desks for the students; something I can't say for all the classrooms I taught in in Singapore (!)pedros wrote:Notice the macs are merely screens for show, and the upstairs resembles a gulag.
Can't remember the exact details but a former teacher told me management thought it would look good if ELT teachers contributed to charidee so ~$10 was deducted from their salary! Obviously no consent needed cos daddy knows bestNotGodot wrote:Not yet. I might get a little shirty if that happens.ziggy1001 wrote:So no salary docked yet as a "voluntary" contribution to charity?
They pulled a few stunts in my brief tenure there. The best is getting the bi-monthly salary, which I likened to scoring drugs....
You wait around anxiously after school closes, whispering 'will it be much longer?', the admin walk in and out of the main office making phone calls and saying 'soon'.
After anything from 30mins to 3 hours later, you get your call to get your wedge, minus the usual 'we took for cash, that we made up'.
Saying that, they do eventually pay up on that day, and it seems almost impossible to be sacked from, which is more than can be said for some places. Teachers wasted on meth, stoned, pissed etc are common sights, as are the really dodgy, probably having to sign an offender register types.
Also some pretty nice people too.
As a warning- be careful of too many extra hours, one guy was given loads of extras and lost most of it in 'tax' : if you make more than the made up tax bracket, they make up an even higher 1, from about 8-11% depending on the day up to 15-20%.

I saw teachers waiting around to be paid. Apparently they take a number now and wait to be called. I was told there is a 10% tax, not applicable on the first $180 (huh?) Of which $100 is a security deposit anyway so you don't do a runner. No mention of overtime hours yet, but I'll be wary and get the tax rate in writing before agreeing. Thanks!pedros wrote:They pulled a few stunts in my brief tenure there. The best is getting the bi-monthly salary, which I likened to scoring drugs....
