Is anyone going to the CamTESOL conference next month? It ain't cheap but two really good speakers will be presenting. Phil Benson (used to work with David Nunan in Hong Kong now at Macquarie in Australia) is the one of the biggest names in learner autonomy. Also, Rebecca Oxford from the US is THE name in learning strategies for second language learners. Here's the link:

Having spoken at two of the first three CamTesol conferences, I decided a few years ago that I wouldn't be going again. Are they still trotting out David Nunan? The last time he was rolled out, the Australian Ambassador mistakenly referred to him as a 'pioneer in task-based learning'. Given that much of his work is/was built on the foundations laid by Dr Richard Allwright at Lancaster University, I thought that was a bit off the mark. Not that she would have known.
My cynicism aside, is anything really achieved from hosting CamTESOL, apart from the ego massage gained by IDP? Do any of the institutions here actually take on board any of the information from the presentations or even remember what any of the plenary speakers have said?
EDIT*** Sorry, just realised that Nunan is not on the agenda. I'm still cynical, though!

I can't recall a single serious problem in Khmer education ever being addressed there, ie discipline, corruption, changing the focus from money at all costs to results.
Added to that, a friend plugged in a LCD projector for a presentation and and the fans cut out, not enough power to run both at the same time apparently, nice, considering what people pay to attend.
This was around 5 years ago, tbf they may be using generators now.
Big cash-cow for ACE, methinks.

This will be my third CAMTESOL, and maybe my last, depending on how much longer I can keep sucking on the 'research' budget teat.
I've never really felt it did anyone any good, apart from the presenters. Shame really, but such is life.
The organization varies from chaotic to slick, to the extent that I still don't know exactly when I will present.
WAY better than Nepal though. What a clusterf**k that was!

CamTESOL was started as a way to provide professional development for local state school teachers. Currently hundreds of them are sponsored every year to attend. Is is not a profitable endeavor. Many Cambodian teachers are very happy to be able to attend. But of course, if MoEYS doesn't change the curriculum and pay teachers better nothing substantial will change.

Is this the conference that some local teachers (BELTEI) are forced to attend at their own expense?

Well, that's another conference done and dusted.
Looked like high drama was going to kick off in my room after I finished presenting. The next presenter was a really weird looking dude, ranting that there must be "no cameras! No filming! No photography in the room!". God only knows what was so secret, but the poor local staff were dumbfounded. One of them has strict instructions to take a photo of each presenter, holding their certificate. The dude got really unhappy when he saw my photo being taken.
But now I've washed the academia out of my hair, and I think I might take a class at the Crycee University tonight.

I suspect you might enjoy their philanthropy more than the experience you had today. On The Buses wrote:But now I've washed the academia out of my hair, and I think I might take a class at the Crycee University tonight.
And at a lower price, too, probably.
Make sure you submit a hard copy of your activity plan.
