Hi all. I'm new here. I visited Cambodia a couple years ago and really enjoyed the vibe, all be it the tourist vibe. I've been teaching at private language schools here in Korea since 2009 with the occasional stint of business English. I've been a "head teacher/trainer", MA in Lit., Got a CELTA back in 2010. I guess if someone were to ask me I'd call my self an "experienced teacher".
I wonder if I could get some advice from this group, especially anyone who's worked in China/Korea/Japan and then settled in Cambodia? I'm wondering what it's like going from one country to the other?
From Korea to Cambodia. Any advice?

Some decent jobs for folks with your quals in Vietnam. Stay there and visit Cambodia on the weekends...

My family, and the fact that I'm also over the age that most schools are willing to recruit up to.
fred, you will find out I tell the truth, as others have.
Decent-paying gigs are hard to find unless you have a science major/master'sin education, even then some people have problems.
Too many backpackers, too many greedy school owners, too many parents who don't know the difference.

Thanks for the responses. I understand the "stay in Korea" sentiment. I guess for me I've hit the brick wall in Korea and I'm ready to depart. I just feel that even though work here is certain and it pay relatively well, if I stay longer I risk descending into depression. At any rate, I'll continue to do research on Cambodia, and even surrounding countries. If anyone else has input I'd love to hear it.
Its my understanding that for Pay, Korea, then China, maybe then Vietnam, are the best for pay. Anyone taught in China?

I taught in China for a total of about 12 years (not all at once, usually two year stints and then I HAD to get out). One can make good bread, but I've been jerked around by unscrupulous employers (did a midnight runner at one place that was royally screwing the foreign teachers; I was blacklisted for that, but the next school I went to got around that), challenged to fights by students....you name it, I probably experienced it. On the up side, government universities provide housing, everything is low priced, you can get good deals on tailor-made clothing, etc. I was usually able to save about 8-10,000 USD per year (and I didn't do without).

Hi,
I've taught in Korea before. Salaries and conditions have been declining in Korea for a long time now and yes you should leave. I was banking $5000 a month back in the gold rush days...
If you want to teach here in Cambodia then the only place I would recommend is ACE. You'll have to take a drop in money and there will be no benefits. Realistically think about whether $1600 per month is enough for you because that's what the money at ACE averages out per month. You will only be paid for 40 weeks of the year.
ACE is not without problems but compared to Korea it is a very easy job, if you keep your head down. Can you make more at ACE? If you're an IELTS examiner you could pick up some extra but all the writing scripts are sent back to OZ now so it's only speaking assessments.
Cambodia is a very easy place to live and the students for the most part are very obliging and fun to teach.
As i said, if you think you can manage on that kind of money, then go for it. The happiest teachers in Cambodia that I know either have a side business or already own property - the rest just moan about money.
Disclaimer: I no longer work at ACE which is why I can be so frank. It's not as good as when it was foreign run but there are MUCH worse places to work. In Cambodia, it's as good as it gets.

When I was here two years ago, I heard a lot about the wonderfulness of ACE, but there's a man here who has been with them for over two years and he said there has been a decline in the conditions there. He didn't go into specifics, and this is strictly hearsay, so.....
Cambodia for the lifestyle. Vietnam for the money. But they are both in my rear view window.
