which option?
which option?
Hi, newbie here. I've been in the KOW for 4 months now, and have decided to stay a while. I've been looking for a teaching job this past 2 weeks, and amazingly so, two have landed on the same day!
Having never taught before, I was offered a teaching position at a University!I accepted immediately. About an hour later i got a call from a private school and, on the spur of the moment, I couldn't help myself, I also accepted.
The thing is, I'm not sure which is the best option.
The university has a massive campus, would look good on my CV, but seems to be looked down upon by 440 members, (still not sure why) or the private school which boasts professors and scholars on its staff and has an elite feel to it, but is only a private children's school.
The salaries are very much the same really, I just can't make my mind up!
Any advice views or opinions would be greatly accepted.
Regards
JL

Hi JL
You would need to name the institutions!
Furthermore, is the university paying you a salary, or an hourly rate? What is the benefits package? Is it truly a university? What accreditation does it have?
Same questions for the private school.
I could give you a clear recommendation if I had that knowledge.

Thanks for the reply Crackers.
Well I'd rather not give the names, but the salary is $11 per hour at the university and at the school, it's $1100 pm, so they're very similar. The children's school is near to where I'm staying, but I'm hoping to find somewhere more permanent after a couple of months.

/Hour or /term?

Probably not, but that's what it says on the logo (smiley)
No, I just thought it would look great for my future references. I'm only planning on staying for a year or so, until I go back home and get a real job.
The school is a real school though. (smiley again)

Hmmm
They are both on the low end of the scale - I can only guess that $11 per hour is somewhere like PUC? If that is the case, then I would avoid it. The place is a joke.
At least the private school offers a salary, which is better for budgeting and probably means you will have public holidays paid too (of which there are 31 in Cambodia!).

I had a feeling you might say that. That's why I didn't want to name which University. You are correct of course, but why is it considered such a bad place?
Anyway, I think I'm going for option 2; the school. There's definitely sth about the university, which no one's willing to pipe up about, and the school did have a lot of professional people milling about. So, school it is.............. I think.

You're buggered if you do, and you're buggered if you don't. Hobson's choice. It's like Trump and Hillary.

Are CVs important when anyone who has no teaching experience can get two job offers after a day?JL wrote: The university has a massive campus, would look good on my CV

They probably looked nice and they have good qualifications. I doubt they have any experience or track record.gavinmac wrote:Are CVs important when anyone who has no teaching experience can get two job offers after a day?JL wrote: The university has a massive campus, would look good on my CV

Yeah, all you TEFLers (and others) - just why is PUC seen in a less than positive lightJL wrote:I had a feeling you might say that. That's why I didn't want to name which University. You are correct of course, but why is it considered such a bad place?
Or is it all rather hush-hush

I don't know if it is still the case, but PUC was aligned with LanguageCorps TEfL training setup. Those that complete the course have a good opportunity of getting work there afterwards. Therefore, it is seen as a factory setup. No need to improve standards as there is always a new bunch of newbies along in a month's time.Stagger Lee wrote:Yeah, all you TEFLers (and others) - just why is PUC seen in a less than positive lightJL wrote:I had a feeling you might say that. Take the easiest job - the one that requires the least preparation and the least time spent on campus. Don't take it too seriously as you're in *Edutainment". Cambodian students are fun to teach and generally very obliging so have some fun in the classroom - personality goes a long way.
