I wondered where gateau de risible was lately. Chuck Wow will have to find another buddy in his area, perhaps I should go round...scobienz wrote:Does anyone want to open a book about how long it takes for ricecakes to start posting about how happy he is in Hanoi, about how it's even better than the fabulous Manila, and how everyone who chooses to be here is an idiot?
The money is in Vietnam apparently

ירי ילדים והפצצת אזרחים דורש אומץ, כמו גם הטרדה מינית של עובדי ההוראה.
I was gonna head down to SGN for my WP, having just got all my papers up-to-date and in-order.
Now the shamelessly corrupt immigration officials have decided teachers can only legally work for one school on a WP!
Madness
Bye-bye, vietscam. Hello again China ( although I hear their FEC rules are equally deranged now).

I've been in Chiang Mai continuously for three years, and live across the street from CMU. I will make a few statements about the TEFL business in this area. I don't think there could be a worse place to apply for a teaching job in Thailand. It's simply supply and demand. The TEFL schools produce about 100 "graduates" per month...many of whom, want to work here (the main reason they chose a course here). To say wages are stagnant is wrong. Wages have gone down in the last 10 years, by 20%+. Then, a non-degree holder could get 35K+, now the door has been shut on non-degree holders, but there are many, who have managed to be grandfathered in, but their paperwork has never been in order, and they are taking risks. The TEFL courses have become a pay to work scheme for non-NES, as those in authority decided that a degreed non-NES was just as good as a non degreed NES, without the alcohol problems, at half the cost. Many jobs are offering 725 usd per month, and they are getting plenty of applicants. But, don't think your troubles will disappear just because you are willing to work for 3.50 USD per hour. The educratic paperwork nightmare has never been worse. My visa troubles went away at age 50, but I like to teach, high school Math to be exact. I haven't even been remotely tempted to give up my visa to go get one for teaching in Vientiane. I would also consider volunteering for 10 hours per week, too, but you need a WP for that, too. The Thais often shoot themselves in he feet, but many foreigners game Immigration every day of the week. If all one needed to do was volunteer 10 hours per week to get a long stay visa; there would likely be about five million backpackers here dedicating their lives to humanity.

i just got back from a week in SGN on business and i always stay around Pham Ngu Lao in District 1.
it's kind of the backpacker destination with lots of cheap guest houses and even cheaper beer joints.
anyway.... this little place i usually eat and drink beer at is always filled with young backpacker kids.
not anymore.
each time i was there, 7 or 8 times, there where several drunken teachers there.
all in there cheap shoes and worn out dress pants. one guy had a black eye. all of them where drunk.
daytime drunk.
talking loud for all to hear about sex... drinking... horrible kids at school.
it was like the riverside 8 years ago.
i was amazed. these guys where from district 6 and 7 and 10. they where talking about who got the best price for the moto dop.
they where all there for cheap beer.
it was the clique cafe of looser teacher stereotypes.
if these guys are getting paid well... it sure didn't show.
