It's interesting they say living costs are low in Myanmar. That's not my experience. Yangon in particular has a chronic shortage of affordable accommodation.

cost of living ( excluding accommodations) are low in Myanmar;
food, beer, transport, gas, shopping, clothes, appliances, street eating etc etc, much on par or less than Thailand but quality not as good as much comes from China ( example a Chinese copy of a 125 honda wave about $700 vs $1,300 for the real thing)
$1,500 /month is low, got two friends teaching there, one makes $3,000/ the other $2,800

No way.
Yangon is very expensive for anything expat centric as expat wages generally are very high.
A one bedroom apartment that any self respecting westerner would want to live in, will do you usd$900 a month plus you are often expected to put up 6 months to 1 year's rent as a deposit, depending on length of lease.
Traffic's a nightmare and bars shut at 10pm. On the other hand it is a safer city than Phnom Penh and importantly, other places where expat wages are high due to hardship posts; PNG, Africa, Saudi. However, like any hardship post, I would not recommend the city unless you can put away a shitload.

I dig Yangon and would go back there to live except the missus is not a fan of the place.
And anyway, FUCK BRAINWORKS! Their salaries were considerably higher ($2000-2500) 5 years ago before Myanmar went and got all fashionable with backpackers.

Phnom Penh is also a hardship post for US embassy staffers, as discussed here:

^ It's not enough Vlad - even if you kicked in another $200, you might as well be in Phnom Penh.
@ LS - I can count on 2 hands those who have been in Yangon more than 3 years. God help you if you've a foreign wife who isn't able to find a social circle quickly.
Frequently contributors on this board get told they can't comment on X or Y because they've 'only' been here 3 years. Why? Because PP, like Saigon or Bangkok have 'lifestyle' expats.
There's no equivalent expat in Yangon - we're all here for the cash. No different to Moresby or Riyadh. It's a hardship post.

PH, have you lived in Myanmar?
I visited twice, completely different in many respects to Cambodia, imo.
I was really glad to get back here and taste food that didn't have a ph of 7.
imho, the 'golden age' for TEFLers in SE ASia is over. Vietnam is the last refuge, and then only for people who can get CRCs and have genuine degrees.
Too many opportunistic new 'international' school owners employing backpackers/ crims/BS artists. And no decent MoE ready to regulate the process and take advice from both locals and foreigners. (why should we consult them?)
Oh well, good while it lasted.

The two biggest regional law firms can't get people to move to Myanmar because of the cost of accommodation. One of them rents a big villa and all the expat lawyers share it in the same way they shared houses while studying 10-20 years ago. The main partner lives next door and the house's security guard reports their activity to the partner. One lad got fired because he was drinking too much at home. That's no way to live as an adult.
PH is right. You get nothing decent in Yangon for less than 750-1000 a month.
