We can all wish SIMON well - while he may have a financial cushion (good for him too!) he may find it galling
to seek employment at rinky-dinky language schools in PP after having been a rather bigger fish elsewhere.
And many of us know exactly what those horrid rinky-dinky schools are like! The bosses take pride in getting
a new teacher cheaper than they got the last one and they're always on the lookout for someone young and
pretty (ideally, pretty enough to have their picture displayed in front of the school!)

Time to face the music boozyoldman. So, that "exotic" lifestyle as a English Teacher in Thailand isn't so much fun now. There is nothing special about teaching General English in Asia - it's mostly edutainment. Old people scare kids, especially boozy old men.boozyoldman wrote:We can all wish SIMON well - while he may have a financial cushion (good for him too!) he may find it galling

No, you cannot compete with young, happy, newly-qualified graduates with all the paperwork, which is why teaching English in Asia long-term is not recommended for most people.

Saigon/HCMC is probably a far better bet.
The dreadful fact is that PP is a better hunting ground than some other towns in Cambodia.
In one provincial city, a degree-granting (fee-paying!) university is eager to secure the services of
visiting NS "volunteers" to teach conversation classes with the promise that if such noble souls teach a full
quota of 20 hours (!) they will be awarded a certificate in a plastic frame.
Is there any hope of getting someone to come and clean my house really thoroughly for a total of
20 hours on the same basis?

Boozyoldman makes some reasonable and true comments, (apart from assuming that I'm rich and have held lofty employment positions).
The fact is that although I was a $ miklionaire years ago, (writing mobile phone apps), those days are long gone and nowadays I am much less financially equipped, but my financial needs are also more modest.
I enjoy living in different countries and learning new languages and will put up with hardship and dickhead bosses to achieve my goals
Alas, I was born the wrong gender and age takes its toll. So I have to rely on my experience to land an acceptable job. I decline KG jobs for the reasons stated - old guys can scare little kids and I'm too old to deal with peed pants, (unless it is an adult female who has peed her pants at my request...)

Whether Simon ends up in PP or Saigon, we want to hear the next thrilling instalment of his quest.
Times are tougher than they were back in the day when "Off the rails in Phnom Penh" was published,
especially for older males (pretty young girlies always seem able to land a job within days, if not hours)
but one instinctively thinks of Wilkins Micawber proclaiming
"Something is bound to turn up!"
