Job Opportunity: Trade the classroom for a tech startup (new posting)
If you are confident, intelligent, tech savvy and are looking for a career in Cambodia outside of the classroom then please read on.
I run a fast growing tech startup based here in Phnom Penh that produces a web based software system that is used by business clients around the world (SaaS B2B). In this role you will be manning our online contact system (email and messenger based) during UK office hours (3pm - 12am Cambodia time) Monday to Friday, so night owls are preferred. You will be required to work in our office from 3pm until 5pm, after 5pm you can choose to work from home or the office (we'll provide a good home internet connection).
This is a mixed role in which you will be acting as Sales Development Representative and Tier 1 Technical Support at the same time. Full training will be provided in both, no prior experience required.
Sales Development Representative
This role isn't about aggressively closing sales, it's about qualifying and nurturing them. So your job will be to engage with potential clients that are contacting us to inquire about our product and understand their requirements, urgency and budget in order to qualify/disqualify them as a sales lead. You will also monitor existing users of our product during their trial period to try to identify and qualify those which look promising. Qualified leads will then be given extra attention, follow up and support during their product trial period.
Responsibilities:
- Engage inbound sales leads via our email/messaging channels
- Schedule introduction calls (in which your job will be to qualify them as a sales lead)
- Proactively engage active trial users that have yet to be qualified
- Nurture and follow up with qualified leads
Tier 1 Support
This role is about being responsive to our existing customers and trial users. We aim to help clients resolve small issues immediately where possible and for more complex issues letting them know what's being done and managing their expectations. We don't receive a high volume of support requests, so you will have time to address each issue thoroughly.
Responsibilities:
- Respond to customer support requests within 30 minutes of reciept
- Solve common support requests immediately
- Hand off complex support requests to technical staff
- Identify opportunities for up sell
I'm not really looking for any specific qualifications or work experience, it's about finding the right person with the right attitude rather than ticking boxes. Really I'm looking for someone with the following characteristics:
- An extrovert and solid communicator
- Fast learner, especially on the technology side of things
- Not scared to pick up the phone or jump on conference calls
- An active interest in technology
- Native level English skills (written and spoken)
- A long term commitment to Cambodia (we don't want to invest in someone who won't be here next year)
Here are some other things that will score bonus points:
- Sales experience
- Corporate experience (just enough to be able to speak their language and know how they think)
- Customer support experience
Base salary is $800 per month + commission (based on number of qualified leads go onto purchase). Expected salary range after commission $1200 -> $1800, although could be more if you're really good at it.
Paid public holidays, plus paid annual leave. Fast home internet connection provided.

No there is no cold calling, these are 100% inbound inquiries, not outbound:Phuket2006 wrote:so cold calling people in the uk?

Our product is a self-service web application. Our clients are generally medium/large businesses and local/regional government departments in North America, Europe and Australia. In the Sales Development Rep role your only contact with potential clients will be with individuals that have either sort out our product and signed up for a 30-day or have requested that we contact them to discuss their requirements.startup_cambodia wrote:So your job will be to engage with potential clients that are contacting us to inquire about our product
Our clients are everyone from the UK Highways department to the Bernie Sanders Campaign and everyone in between, we're not dealing with little old ladies in the UK. We're selling a high tech product that our clients love. Your job is not to sell to them, your job is to weed out the tire kickers, then for the serious prospects, hold their hand and guide them through their evaluation process of our software, and then take care of their support needs if/when they become a client.
Most contact will be via email managed through our support system. The calls are usually for larger clients that request an introduction call early on, or a conference call / online product demo with their management team prior to making a purchasing decision. You will likely be making fewer than twenty calls per week and fewer than twenty emails a day. This is about exceeding client expectations, not volume.
Most of all I'm looking for someone who is HUNGRY, someone that currently has a JOB in Cambodia but wants to start a CAREER here and is willing to graft to get there. This is a small but fast growing tech company with MASSIVE growth potential, we're already achieving 20% quarter on quarter growth but still feel we are underachieving, we want 40%! If you want to be a part of that growth, then please get in touch.

Good information provided by the OP.
All the best with receiving some responses and with the business.

All well and good, but why should anyone put in real sweat and blood when the rewards are merely salary and limited commission, not any kind of stake in the "fast growing tech company with massive growth potential" - none of the realised potential will accrue to mere employees. Most of all I'm looking for someone who is HUNGRY, someone that currently has a JOB in Cambodia but wants to start a CAREER here and is willing to graft to get there. We're a UK company and our customers think we are all in the UK, the reality is we're here. The UK is also a pretty sweet timezone for a global business, in the morning it's the afternoon in Asia, in the afternoon it's the morning in the America's. If we kept Cambodian hours it would make contact with the U.S problematic, and they're our single biggest market.Phuket2006 wrote:thanks for the explanation, but than why UK office hours? Are u based originally in the UK?....Our clients are generally medium/large businesses and local/regional government departments in North America, Europe and Australia.

Here's a whole list of reasons:electron wrote:All well and good, but why should anyone put in real sweat and blood when the rewards are merely salary and limited commission, not any kind of stake in the "fast growing tech company with massive growth potential" - none of the realised potential will accrue to mere employees. Most of all I'm looking for someone who is HUNGRY, someone that currently has a JOB in Cambodia but wants to start a CAREER here and is willing to graft to get there. Plus bonus reason number 9. Early employees in tech startups that blow up tend to make a stack of cash. Getting a tech startup to the point of hockey stick growth is a long and extremely difficult journey, but also extremely profitable if achieved. Once you've got there a company would be stupid to risk disrupting that growth vector by not sharing the rewards of that success with the people that got it there.

So instead of getting Indians or Filipinos you want to offer westerners the chance to earn a base salary of 800 bucks a.month with earning potential of up to 1800? Answering customer queries on the phone. So sort of a call centre or tele-sales? But you want people with jobs who here for the long haul?
Maybe pensioners working a part time English teaching gig would be interested but can't think of any younger working people who are smart fast learners who would jump at this. Unless they are currently bar tending or something equally spurious.

If you read above you would see that this isn't call center work or telesales. You are dealing with either existing clients or potential clients that have approached us and requested a trial of our product. As I said above, probably fewer than twenty calls per week, the rest of the contact is via email.
There's a reason I'm posting this in the staff room. The bottom line is that there are many very talented westerners here in Cambodia who don't happen to be qualified in the very few sectors here that will pay western level salaries. Teaching might not be their forte, or maybe they are disillusioned with the way the English schools are run or the lack of future growth potential in the role. Maybe they have started a family here and want a route that can provide long term personal growth opportunities whilst remaining here in Cambodia. I understand about this very clearly, I've been there.
What I'm offering isn't the best starting salary in the world (although already well above 90% of English teaching jobs). What I am offering is the beginning of a career, and what's more, a career in Cambodia. You will work for a company where you are valued and well treated, a company that's doing very interesting things, a company where you can be sure that your hard work will be appreciated, a company which you can be sure will share its successes with the people that helped to get it there.
What I want is someone that's hungry, someone that's fully on board with what we are trying to achieve and someone who's got the stones to take a punt and have some skin in the game. Trust me, if our company gets to where I want it to go (where I'm sure it's going to go), then I fully expect our staff to be out earning nearly everyone on this board in a few years from now and I'm not just talking about the teachers.
If you want a nice clearly defined position where everything is laid out for you, then don't even bother getting in touch. If however you want to get into something early and have a role that you can shape and own and be part of something with nearly unlimited growth potential then give me a ping.

All well and good, but I doubt you'll get "hungry" people with the salary you're offering. It's all well and good to say that you'll raise the pay if the company does well, but how will you guarantee that to someone? There's nothing to stop you not doing that.startup_cambodia wrote:If you read above you would see that this isn't call center work or telesales. Well, I'd be interested but I can't afford to take the necessary pay cut to join the team.
