The $11 per hour is taxed, right? That would make it $10 per hour.
Why do schools still get away with paying the same as 20 years ago, when the cost of living was a fraction of today?

it is crazy that they still pay what they paid 7 years ago. (longer period of time really, if you ignore that the 10 became 11 only because of accounting for the introduction of taxation to the salaries)

I love bitches n gonna fuck Texas and the USA+ right up their god damn ass! Hallelujah!
What's the deal on this place? A serious heads up would be appreciated.
Thanks and have a good day.

It's a university that appears to pay less than some English language centres.Jefe wrote:What's the deal on this place? A serious heads up would be appreciated.

Don't know much else besides that.
It's a language school. The uni part is separate. The best thing about it is that the DOS for the foreign teachers is an Englishman that used to work in journalism. He takes about 10 minutes to sort out what takes most Khmer DOS's 2 weeks. And he doesn't lie to you, which is a huge bonus. However, he does seem to have picked up on not letting people know certain things. Probably because it comes back and bites him in the arse.Jefe wrote:What's the deal on this place? Also good about PUC, is that you won't get too many kids in your class. They are mainly 18-22 etc. Not a bad place to work, except for what others have said about the wages already. Iirc it's been the same hourly rate for about 16 years up until recently . Plus they used to tax the 10$. I think maybe they pay 11 now because of that, but it was 10 when I worked there and that was taxed.
Don't forget you will have to mark around 120 exams every 3 months in your own time though, and you don't get paid for the excessive amount of holidays/ term breaks even though the students pay the school for them.

I first came to Phnom Penh, 11 years ago. The salary PUC paid to the teachers back then was $10. per hour. Now they pay $11. Per hour but now one dollar per hour of the teachers salary is deducted for tax purposes so in axuality the teachers are paid the same today per hour as 11 years ago. When I arrived 11 years ago they had only one campus now they have six. Many of their former teachers have been convicted of very serious crimes. The only thing they really care about is putting a white face in front of their students. They will pretty much take any white face that shows up and wants a job. So if you are a desperate low life look no further. At the end of an hours class you can buy 10 beers. Enjoy!
Thank you for your candor and information Lost Boy.
You guys might not realize how much help replies like this are. One minute for you to reply helps me put a piece into the jigsaw puzzle (or not put it in there if other sources are disagreeing with it. Of course I am not implying that they are.) and make some decisions.
Have a good day everyone and thanks again. I particularly am grateful that people have pointed out serious criminal histories of some of the teachers. As with any place abroad where expats congregate, you get those guys (FYI, I have a DUI2 from several years ago. So I am not that much holier than thou/they).
A recent favorite was during a border run to Costa Rica. Staying at a Best Western and at a bar by the pool I was having a coffee and dinner after a swim. An American guy starts up a conversation and he was quite good. Small talk, listening rather than talking much. Subtle hints about the volatility of US markets. Small talk. Talk of the US banking collapse and fast forward to:
"I will sell you gold online" (simplifying it here).
I laughed and then the real criminal part shows. The look of wanting to do intimidate or do violence in a good size guy. No doubt he would be happy to roll me if he could or got a chance. But, 16 years overseas. Not the first, nor the last time I will see it.
FYI, I once carried a guys business cards who I truly couldn't stand to hand out to people like this guy on the rare moment of really justifiable payback. Or give them to hookers and say "call me after midnight as I work late...."
Like your attitude. Reality check and make it positive. One can always say NO, I don't want to work here.
Have a good day.

Abou-Gor said it; hours and hours of totally unpaid marking and grading.
Say you have 60 papers and can mark a Stakhanovite 12 in one hour (very good going!) - that's five hours right there
UNPAID AND IN YOUR OWN TIME.
You may or may not have to then grade them by percentages ...
If you are really lucky, you'll be assigned o the building in which adolescent girls practice shrieking on the stairs to
enjoy the acoustics of the stairwell.

I do hope you are a bit holier than they....If I remember right this guy tried to smash through a police barrier on his motorbike when they were trying to arrest him too:Jefe wrote:FYI, I have a DUI2 from several years ago. So I am not that much holier than thou/they.

God, that is so depressing to hear. 'Bout 2 months ago when I was in PP, they were looking for a teacher to teach IELTS exam preparation. I applied, citing my years of IELTS teaching experience, certificate in teaching IELTS, London University Master's degree, TEFL etc etc bla bla bla. They will pretty much take any white face that shows up and wants a job
They replied back that I had not been shortlisted because my qualifications and experience were wholly inadequate.
Judging from the thread comments, Thank God I wasn't shortlisted
