Which Schools ask for a Demo Lesson Plan?
Which Schools ask for a Demo Lesson Plan?
I am going to approach some schools in Phnom Penh in the next few days. I am female and I have a CELTA and a degree.
My preference is to try to get work at schools that will ask for me to prepare a demonstration lesson. If any readers know of schools that definitely ask for a demonstration lesson before hiring, would you please reply with some information (adding the details of what street the school is on too if you know).
Thank you in advance.

When I was down on my luck a few years ago, I actually applied to BELTEI.
First I had to find and go to their head office where they gave me an application form to fill out.
Then I had to return there about a week later for an interview where, after half an hour of waiting, I had to write an essay and make a lesson plan around some language topic they gave me. Took me about an hour.
Then I had to wait in an office for another half hour for the son to speak to me , basically about f all, just wasting my time.
Then I had to wait another 45 minutes for his lordship to see me as well. Finally, 3.5 hours after the interview time given, he decided he could see me now.
There he was, his portly self, stuck behind a large rosewood desk perusing a giant monitor at one end of the room. He then proceeded to tell me that he had every BELTEI building wired up to it and could see any classroom he wished. Fucking big fucking LOL. KR or what?
The essay was on " The difference between public and private school education". Seeing as I was British, I let them know that public school in the UK means private education, and that state school is a system where the government pays for free education for the population. Not sure if he appreciated that or not.
Anyhow, after 4 hours of basically bullshit, he told me he'would offer me $10 ph (degree, HND,120 hr TEFL, 5 years experience) and that he could only offer me 7.5 hours per week. I asked him to kindly phone me when he had more work coming in and left.

Are schools that ask applicants for a demonstration lesson better?

So Beltei, with the shit reputation, asks for an essay and lesson plan then offers $10.
Don't think PUC does, unless things have changed.
Good question, gavinmac

PUC now requires one to present oneself in front of a board of directors, which consists of 3 people I believe. Some wanking Khmer tosser has been to the states and now thinks he's as good as an American. heheviolet wrote:So Beltei, with the shit reputation, asks for an essay and lesson plan then offers $10.

No it isn't, it's a bloody terrible question. Can't he read or something?Good question, gavinmac

Classic Khmer fur coat no knickers scenario. Repeated all across society.
If they have the appearance of doing the right thing then people will believe that they are a proper and serious place.

The essential issue is one of supply and demand.
If there are few takers for jobs offering split shifts and
work in 2 or more locations at a princely $10/hour,
interviews will be perfunctory and brief - "Can you start tomorrow?"
There is critical oversupply of willing workers in this line of toil:
Vast blubbery North American squaws
Australian sheilas dressed like whores
Callow acned youths in jeans
Mincing *British Council* queens
Look around and you will see
The EFL menagerie

Spot on, but don't forget that it is more about feeling superior to people, especially white ones. Those limp insipid hand shakes and sickly eyes. They must be thick as dog shit if they think any decent westerner actually feels anything but utter contempt for them.Khmerhamster wrote:Classic Khmer fur coat no knickers scenario. Teaching experience? Don't make me laugh, as if these schools required that. All one needs in Cambodia is a long flexible tongue. Oh, and no previous visas in your passport maybe.salvajeuno wrote:Just curious, do you have teaching experience?tVCB wrote:I am going to approach some schools in Phnom Penh in the next few days. OP should be looking at ACE, Northbridge etc. Schools that try to attain an international standard of education. Which is where the tin pot alley schools get their new fangled ideas from in the first place.

no previous visas? what does that mean? What's wrong with having work experience in Cambodia? Maybe it's an issue for males (although only for certain 'types' I would think). I don't think it would be for females. Happy to be enlightened.

Thank you for the replies everyone. I might place PUC, with its board of directors, toward the bottom of the list.
The comment about visas. Is that referring to people being made to back pay taxes and work permit fines?
Hello. Yes, I taught adults and teenagers for approximately one year. The classes I taught were at various levels of English competency. I have been working in a different field for the past couple of years but would like to do some teaching again.salvajeuno wrote:Just curious, do you have teaching experience?tVCB wrote:I am going to approach some schools in Phnom Penh in the next few days.
