A few questions about Teaching in PP
A few questions about Teaching in PP
Hello all, 1st time poster so go easy on me
So me and my girlfriend have a 3 month trip booked for SE Asia beginning in Thailand and we are hoping to teach English for 1 month of the 3 in Phnom Penh and enjoy our time travelling for the other 2 months. My girlfriend has a TEFL certificate but no degree, whereas I have a degree but no TEFL certificate, but I am a qualified teacher with a couple of years experience.
I have lots of nitty gritty questions but the main 2 I have are:
1. Do you think it will be possible for both of us to gain a teaching position at the same School.
2. Will it be possible for us to gain a teaching position for only 4/5 weeks.
Now for the nitty gritty questions -
1. Is there any possibility to email out CVs and do Skype interviews/secure face to face interviews before we arrive in Phnom Penh?
2. I'm also wondering if there is a way we can get our 1 month working visa to start a few days after we arrive at least so that it gives us time to settle in and gain teaching positions or do we have to start the working visa on the day we land?
3. When are the Cambodian School breaks/holidays/term dates?
Thank you in advance to anyone that can answer any of my questions as you will be helping me out a great deal!

1, 2, and 1: possible, probably not possible, and unlikely with schools that will employ someone for 1 month
2. There is no working visa. Get the ordinary (not tourist) visa if you want to stay in Cambodia more than 60 days.
3. No idea

Do you thinks it fair on the students to have teachers constantly coming and going? I don't think it is. If you care about children's education, why not make a longer-term commitment? If you're only planning on teaching for 1 month to make some extra cash for travelling, I'd say don't bother, find a job in a bar, gh, restaurant or hostel.
I'm not a teacher by the way, just thinking about the welfare and development of the children.

I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.
Yeah well done budgavinmac wrote:You're not a qualified English teacher.dave_r92 wrote:

Yeah I understand what you are saying but unfortunately I can't commit any longer because I will be starting a position at a SEN school in the UK because I am very invested in the welfare and development of children. I figure if the shortage of EFL teachers in Cambodia is as bad as I keep hearing then surely it's better for the kids to have a EFL teacher for a month as opposed to not at all?PSD_Kiwi wrote:Do you thinks it fair on the students to have teachers constantly coming and going? There is no shortage. Enjoy your holiday, because that's all it is.dave_r92 wrote: I figure if the shortage of EFL teachers in Cambodia is as bad as I keep hearing then surely it's better for the kids to have a EFL teacher for a month as opposed to not at all?

On the bright side, you'll both be welcomed with open arms as a totally unpaid volunteer for a month.

Where did you hear that there's a shortage of EFL teachers in Cambodia?dave_r92 wrote: I figure if the shortage of EFL teachers in Cambodia is as bad as I keep hearing then surely it's better for the kids to have a EFL teacher for a month as opposed to not at all?
There probably an assumption that because most white kids can get a teaching job within 48 hours of arrival, there must be a dearth of EFL teachers on the ground. The truth is more likely to be that the conditions of employment and lack of management at that particular echelon of schools is so utterly shite that teachers just walk out on their contracts mid semester, leaving schools to scramble to give jobs to whoever shows up in their doorstep.chkwoot wrote:Where did you hear that there's a shortage of EFL teachers in Cambodia?dave_r92 wrote: I figure if the shortage of EFL teachers in Cambodia is as bad as I keep hearing then surely it's better for the kids to have a EFL teacher for a month as opposed to not at all?

If you go that route, make sure you do a midnight run after you got your salary. I see this kind of shits all the time from backpackers trash. Kids left hanging with no teachers in the class, parents wasted their hard earned money, the schools just recruit any white monkeys that came along and the cycle continues.
EVERYONE BOW DOWN TO HIS MAJESTIES phat kunthea™
