A good TV series for a Khmer person to absorb English
I have a young Khmer person living in our house with my family.
They want to learn English but lessons aren't being absorbed.
I'd like to try making a rule that they must watch one English language TV show each evening then explain what happened to me over breakfast the next day.
I reckon this could be more useful than than learning useless vocab and incomprehensible grammar rules at English school.
I'd like to find a TV series which has a plot simple enough for them to follow, the language is clear, but is exciting enough that it will catch their interest & they will want to watch it.
I may even choose to watch it with them.
I'm thinking something like the walking dead or Chicago fire.
Any thoughts, advice or recommendations?

Flight of the choncords.
I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.

Is that a serious suggestion?PSD_Kiwi wrote:Flight of the choncords.
I'll respond as if it was...
I don't get all the humour on this so it's pretty unlikely that a Khmer young person with limited English will get any of the jokes. I was thinking maybe something more actiony.
And also I dont want them to grow up speaking like a Kiwi
Better than speaking like a Sceptic! Of course it wasn't a serious suggestion!
There's this young nouveau riche Khmer guy, chubby little fooker with glasses, who always hangs around foreigners in bars, speaks with an over the top American accent, sounds bloody ridiculous, he switches from LA gangbanger accent to Texan to whatever depending on the crowd he's with...and loud, really fucking irritating to the point I wanna smack him in the head and tell him to speak normally!

Didn't think it was serious - but didn't want to assume.PSD_Kiwi wrote:Better than speaking like a Sceptic! Of course it wasn't a serious suggestion!

I reckon no matter what they watch on TV they will end up speaking English like me. Much to the amusement of my friends.

Law & Order (the original). It's on Monday and Tuesday at 8:00 pm (TNT). The second half of the show is usually in the courtroom and the attorneys are speaking fairly slowly and clearly for the benefit of the jury. Likewise beneficial for those learning English.

Beautifully, I'm dreamy. If you heard me, you'd be infatuated. Best for you to stay away.YaTingPom wrote:And how do you speak?

It's not my thing but I certainly admire your bravery in coming out.
So, any TV shows?
Denial will only eat you up. Welcome it. Embrace it.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:Good for you YTP.YaTingPom wrote:Little bit gay.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:Beautifully, I'm dreamy. If you heard me, you'd be infatuated. Best for you to stay away.YaTingPom wrote:And how do you speak?

I'm not convinced a Khmer teenager will be interested in dated TV progs or as PB has suggested period dramas.
I think i need something with a bit of excitement to keep them hooked. I want them to watch it because they are enjoying it - not because uncle says they must watch it.

OK.
Britain's Got Talent - lots of proper English speakers and entertainment, same goes for X Factor.
If you want them to speak your bastadized language then there are US versions of the above.
Or Home and Away....
