CIA First International School
Anyone have any information about CIA First International School it is in near Phnom Penh (spelling doesn't look right for some reason)? Possibly taking a teaching position at the school and there is nothing about it on ISR or any place else except their own website.

This is a company posing as a school. They are not accredited 9-12. Almost all of the certificates teachers that were hired this year have broken contract and quit. Most "teachers" hired do not have any experience in education, degrees in education, nor degrees in the subject area that they teach. The administration ONLY has experience with this institution. They only earned their PGCI within the last 2-3 years and do not hold administrative credentials in education at all. If you have a teachers certificate and any teaching experience, do not accept a contract. If you have neither and want to give teaching a go, be aware that the contract does not indicate the salary that you will receive (many untold deductions). They also do not pay for a return flight EVER. You'll be lucky to save enough money for a return flight and pay your monthly expenses. It becomes reminiscent of indentured slavery.

Interesting. Given that it's a new school, I don't find it surprising that teachers or management don't have the same experience as those at ISPP or Northbridge. You have to gain experience somewhere...
What exactly is the salary? I remember someone posting $1800 or something along those lines but I can't recall. What deductions were made to your salary? Is a return flight specified in your contract?
(Edit: i see it was this thread)

Umm, yea. This comment left Vlad speechless.
I'm also at a loss of words to reply to possibly the most stupid (or trolling) post I've seen (which is an impressive feat on this forum).

1. afaik, it is a WASC-accredited school. I know who prepared the submission.unionjack wrote:This is a company posing as a school. They are not accredited 9-12. 2. Secondly, some of the best schools (I think most, in fact) in the country are owned by very influential people who have huge business interests, so I'm not sure what your point is.
3. I do know that several years ago, no one got hired without a degree and a TEFL/CELTA, and quite a few had Master's degrees. That may have changed, but given the surplus of job-seekers, I doubt it. They can afford to be picky. Yes, I know of some clowns working there, but one could say the same of any school, even the top ones.
4. Anyone who gets hired and doesn't ask about deductions is an idiot, end of, sorry. Any deductions not revealed at that stage constitute fraud.
I suspect you had an unfortunate experience, trust me, I can believe that, but misrepresenting the facts is not helping your case.
Even if all your claims were true, it's still a better deal than 90% of the others.

If I were hired for a job, any job, I wouldn't ask about deductions from my pay. Perhaps I'm naive.
What are the typical and atypical deductions from a teacher's pay?

Exactly. Besides taxes I don't see what deductions are reasonable or to be expected. And for the record, a CELTA/TEFL are NOT a real teaching credentials. They don't make you a certified teacher. They might help you become a better English teacher and learn some basics, but it doesn't qualify you in any way, shape or form. That being said, I've met a few people who worked there over the years and they all seemed well-adjusted and I'm pretty sure they were qualified teachers, only younger than those at ISPP and the likes. The OP sounds like a new poster with an axe to grind, but I'd like to be fair and hear his side of the story.

In America, you'd be naive. here you'd be cautious/sensible.gavinmac wrote:If I were hired for a job, any job, I wouldn't ask about deductions from my pay. Perhaps I'm naive.vladimir wrote: 4. Tax: approx 9% for most (legal) typical
Hours not worked due to students not arriving, public holidays, etc.Mostly affects hourly-paid teachers.Depends on hourly rate. Illegal.
WP: maybe a loan repayment, depends on the employer (legal) typical
Visa: as above (legal)typical
Social Security/insurance $2.50/month, borderline legal/illegal, not sure who is liable for this cost. mandatory.
Deposit: up to $500, totally illegal, aka 'garnishing' under the Labour Act.
Books and materials deposit: varies, maybe not illegal but very dodgy, imho
Placement fee: if agent is used, agent may receive monthly payment from teacher, sometimes up to $200pm: illegal
Some schools force teachers to wear uniforms which teachers pay for: illegal
A certain very well-known school was deducting $1/minute for tardiness: illegal
Various others too insane and incredible to mention.
A little birdie told me that a well-known school has not paid ts teachers this month. Pay day was 1st May. Apparently the school in question is building another campus, and all available funds are being funneled into that project, even salaries, it seems. The VP has resigned, as salaries are habitually late.
No names mentioned, but a well-known long-term Australian expat would be smiling.
