CIA First International School
cia-hole...I do not quote the mission statement...I am a person. I am sorry if being articulate offends you. I work at the school...as a teacher. I am married with a child on the way. The school pays me more than adequately to deal with the further extension to my family, and the school also funds my pursuit of further education.
cia-hole...I have no idea who you are, but your experience seems unusual to me (in terms of the school).
Lastly (in this post), how does a man holding a microphone represent psychopathy?

Fairly common in this country for staff to resign just after receiving a bonus. Why resign if you know hang on a few months and bit of bunce?irwin fletcher wrote:
No doubt due to the obvious follow up questions about why one would 'resign' after just receiving a bonus?
Had you just had your fill of mgmt toiling and ached to get back in the tefl jobber trenches at beltie?
Also fairly common .for staff who have received expensive training a and been upskilled to piss off to a higher salary. Khmers mostly but suspect that some expats follow suit.
With that new job gibbon arms is in the counting house counting out his money. I hear they pay even more than the army.

Hahaha, I'm sensing some jealousy from the goon-show sycophant and the dodgy TEFLer accountant who tries to shield errant buddies on 440 and equates fraud with aggressive marketing,...
But back to the NNS...
Hey! Those bastards stole my land! They have no standards/morals/ethics!
I'm leaving this horrible country! It has no future! I'm never coming back..
UK interview: I'm sorry Sir, but we don't have vacancies for people with your..ahem..qualifications..
Tail between legs, runs back to Cambodia.
Hey work for us? Remember us?
Of course! Who has standards/morals/ethics? You're lovely guys!
I'm gonna be the head teacher, megalomania...Uh excuse me, we don't have such a position...
LOL, you've been putting on weight, gibbon...too much sugar in the Darjeeling tea?
Anyway, doesn't your new job pay? At least buy a decent iron so you can iron that horribly oversized purple shirt...and get a decent haircut!
Damn, if you're going to appear on a website, at least prepare for the photograph properly!
Are you sure your qualifications are genuine? I'm not.
I do vaguely recall you posting some photoshopped certificate/diploma from some Asian country...

re the bonus: irwin felcher is such a moron, he didn't think about the timeline.
Performance bonus end of first year...resigned after end of second year...iow, a year passes...and this clown is teaching literature?
Buy the iron. Get liftee pads for the shoes. Get a decent haircut. Get rid of the raccoon-eye shadows.
And finally..learn to read..English..it's different to Bengali.

Vlad: "1. afaik, it is a WASC-accredited school. I know who prepared
the submission"
It is only accredited K-8. Unless there is some doctoring of the
numbers (like doing the retention of teachers figures before the end
of the school year, so they don’t look so bad), they won't get 9-12. I
hear that there have been some tip offs to WASC about the lack of
integrity of the school. I wouldn't be surprised if k-8 is
investigated and possibly pulled before the next visit in fall 2018.
WASC accreditation requires teachers to be certified in their subject
area and/or be highly qualified in their field of study. This is where
CIA is not meeting the requirements and scrambling to get teachers
qualified with PGCIs.
Vlad: In reference to ". I do know that several years ago, no one got
hired without a degree and a TEFL/CELTA, and quite a few had Master's
degrees. That may have changed, but given the surplus of job-seekers,
I doubt it. They can afford to be picky. Yes, I know of some clowns
working there, but one could say the same of any school, even the top
ones."
One of the most recent replacements for a licensed, qualified teacher
has experience as a grocery clerk. That is not to say that former
grocery clerks can’t be great teachers. What I am saying is that he is
not certificated nor has worked in the field of education previously.
So does that qualify him to teach English Language Arts to high school
students, apparently it does at CIA. Another ELA replacement teacher
got the job because she knows the chiropractor of one of the
administrators back in her home country. She also has ZERO experience
as a teacher with ZERO education in education.
Gavinmac: the questionable deductions have to do with:
1) the insurance (which was voluntary, but very misleading in the
informational meeting), In fact staff who elected to sign up for the
insurance were told that they would be deducted monthly for the
premiums and would have coverage for the academic year. Then in March
it came to light that accounting miscalculated the deductions AND
that the insurance was only valid until April 11, 2017. The options
were: double up on payments (salary deductions) through April to
cover the accounting mistake, then sign on for a new policy to cover
April 2017-2018 (which many had already decided to not return for the
following school year) OR continue to pay the old premium through June
AND pay the new premium starting in April.
2) the school does not cover Visa reimbursement NOR work permit costs,
which skyrocketed this year. I also know that the immigration
officials have questioned the legitimacy of the work status of the
staff recently, when once AGAIN, all staff had to bring in their
passports and prove their valid business visas. Integrity in question?
Crackers: " Almost all of the 'certified' teachers who did not
complete their contracts had outdated qualifications and couldn't
adapt to the school's innovative learning and teaching philosophy.
Those teachers he speaks of were generally objectivist in their
teaching beliefs, and were unwilling or unable to make the switch to
student-centered learning and the broader constructivist philosophy.
The school long ago rejected the 'chalk and talk' approach to
teaching, but accepts that some teachers still prefer this method.
That is the right of those teachers, but simply means that CIA is not
the right school for them. Those teachers also struggled to adjust to
the digital classroom - the school has learned its lesson and going
forward, new teachers will be evaluated for basic IT skills.
As to the certified teachers who did not complete their contracts: ALL
of them have current teaching credentials. A teacher cannot teach in
the US without current certification in the states from which they
came. In my humble opinion, they all adapted to the innovative (if not
extremely narrow in scope) learning and teaching philosophy. In fact
the reason why they left was due to the lack of integrity and
transparency of the Administration after many attempts to remedy the
situation through emails, meetings, proposals, etc. As for IT skills
it varies with each new member of staff. I saw some that were very
tech savvy while others struggled. The fact that the school solely
relies on Google classroom and working internet does not show the
implementation of varied teaching techniques nor the ability to adapt
to the random power outages and/or lack of internet access during
periods of standardized testing, etc.
" A school should be measured by the success of its students, and CIA
FIRST students are regularly getting accepted into high quality
universities worldwide, are sitting College Board AP Exams, and are
regularly competing with and often surpassing the performance of
students at the $20,000 + a year international schools in Cambodia"
This is the first year that students are sitting the AP exams. It will
be interesting to see how many of them score a minimum of 3 or higher
(which is the passing score). I have total faith in the ability of the
students. Of those that taught AP this year, only a few attended a
weekend AP seminar, to teach them about how to teach to AP standards.
None of them had previous experience teaching an AP course. From what
I understand many are being sent to week-long trainings provided by
College Board this year. I also know that only few (2-3) of those that
taught AP actually have valid teaching certificates in their area of
study. Those who have experience in AP schools know that it is not
recommended for (native English speaking) students to take more than 2
AP courses in a school year due to the rigorous curriculum. Yet, CIA
First is requiring student in the upper levels of streaming to take at
least 3 AP courses in their final years. They are not required to take
the AP exams but must take the classes because the school does not
have alternative curriculum for those who do not wish to take AP in
their final years but are in the highest stream academically. The AP
curriculum is very rigorous and the reading requirements are very
heavy, even for native speakers. Speaking of which, very few students
at CIA First are native speakers. Furthermore, the standardized
testing shows that most of the students in grades 5-11 are below grade
level in reading and writing. Many are several grades below their
grade level in these areas and yet they do not receive English support
after grade 8. This is a travesty for the students.
To add to the dysfunction of the school, there is a group of students
in middle school that lost one of their core subject teachers at
semester and at least half a semester went by in which the students
were being supervised, NOT TAUGHT, by other staff during their
planning periods. There were NO grades for their report cards, because
there was no teaching/learning, for those students for at least a
quarter of the school year. One of those that covered at least one
class for the missing teacher asked the students what their parents
thought of the situation. The students replied that they hadn't told
their parents. They are middle school students who suddenly have an
indefinite free period three times per week. Of course they aren't
going to tell their parents. But I question the integrity of a school
that covers this up and does not appeal to the parents for support.
