I know of at least 2 people teaching there with only TEFL certificates, but doing really well...but they have been there a long time.
A lot of SE Asia is open to people doing things with lower qualifications than back home, and that doesn't only apply to teaching...construction, food and beverage, finance, etc.

Yes, I agree. Although I have 2 Master's degrees, they are not related to the subject that I teach, and I do not have a B.Ed or PGCE. I do have a clutch of specialist teaching certificates in Phonics, IELTS, Special Educational Needs and Girls' Education.I know of ta least 2 people teaching there with only TEFL certificates, but doing really well...
Actually, even if I had a B.Ed or M.Ed, it would not give me a higher salary with my employer. I prefer not to teach Maths/Physics (my MSc qualification). I 'fell into' teaching KG many years ago and have stayed teaching Young Learners because I understand how important it is for YLs to get their pronunciation correct, letter-writing, blending letter groups etc.
Also, they are too small to hit you back after you slap them (that's a joke).

I like PP very much, but when I applied to schools in that city I got nowhere. Seems only young white females teach YLs...

I read the OP story a few days ago. I remember Vietnam being No. 2. I know there is a real shortage of "real" teachers in VN and the government is bent on raising second-language standards even higher because they are unhappy about English proficiency among Viet students. From what I can tell they really are seeking qualified real teachers; there are far too many tourist teachers and they have clamped down on visa access to weed them out. This happened 2-3 years ago and is continuing.

So they can hit you back? *(that's also a joke)simon44 wrote:Also, they are too small to hit you back after you slap them (that's a joke).
Not sure why it was deemed offensive...

Because you're an insufferable tit with no redeeming qualities, for starters.vladimir wrote:Not sure why it was deemed offensive...

I would question the 'insufferable' part, I think I'm only about 50% insufferable, but I'm working on that.DanCooper wrote:Because you're an insufferable tit with no redeeming qualities, for starters.vladimir wrote:Not sure why it was deemed offensive...
As for redeeming qualities...mmm...I'm of average height?

That's kind of a game-changer there though, isn't it?simon44 wrote:

Nah, there are quite a few ESL teaching jobs there at the bottom of the heap. Salaries seem to be going down the more popular the place becomes. Simon44 has kept pace with what I used to be paid, my last salary there in 2011 was $2750pcm + 13 weeks fully paid hols as well!vladimir wrote:I doubt anyone in Myanmar studies ESL.Phuket2006 wrote:simon are u teaching English as a second language or teaching in a real school as a real teacher??
Most of Asia would be studying English in an EFL programme. No offence Phuket, but the 'real teacher' slur may pack more weight if you were informed.

FR, I think we got our wires crossed.
They advertise the jobs as ESL, but technically it's EFL. ESL applies to situations such as Mexicans studying English in America. It boils down to what most of the people around you are speaking, iirc.
So any SE Asian in their own country (except maybe in Singapore) is probably studying EFL.
It's usually advertised as ESL simply because the schools placing the ad don't have a clue, and misuse has led to an incorrect merging of the terms.

Does it really matter? It's still teaching English, isn't it? Same skills, same techniques etc.

Well, one degree is in Rocket Science and t'other is in Thai Studies. Both don't add any great value to my current employment, (my ICT skills do add value because I code software for learning apps, create and edit video, audio and image content etc for class lessons).I have 2 Master's degrees
That's kind of a game-changer there though, isn't it?
Anyway, I'm happy to accept their salary bonus for having a post-grad degree...
From a thread that I posted on eslcafe, I just got accepted to study for an online MA in Adult Learning & Global Change. I don't 'need' this MA, but I'm going to study it because it is tuition-free for EU citizens!
I agree. I see salaries at some language schools to now be in the range $1,200 - $1,600 (or less).Salaries seem to be going down the more popular the place becomes
As long as I stay working for my employer, I can't see my salary being 'cut'. I enjoy my job and hope that it will see me through to retirement from full-time employment in about 7 years from now (maybe when I'm around 65 years old).

No, it's not. Its very different in almost every way you can imagine, from motivation to lesson plans to results. Speak to anyone who has taught ESL and EFL and they will tell you how much easier ESL is. ESL is a breeze by comparison.Marmite wrote:Does it really matter? It's still teaching English, isn't it? Higher starter levels or at least faster progression, more English spoken in class, easier to find materials and start activities, , better pay for teachers, the list goes on.
