Came across this today, quite informative.

Even though it's about Thailand I feel it's pretty much the same here, unless you're teaching in a top-notch school.
Why teaching English may not be a good idea

The article said that Aussies can collect the pension whilst living overseas; I didn't think this was the case...you need to be living in Australia to collect the pension. Or am I wrong...?

You are wrong (to the best of my knowledge; I'm not Australian). There's an Australian man living in my building who gets his pension. There was something about needing to be physically present in Australia for a certain period of time before he was eligible, but I don't remember the details. This is second-hand, of course.

I taught English in Cambodia from 2000 till 2016, factory schools, privates and companies. If I went back in time would I change anything? Fuck no! The experience changed me completely, I went from a worn out druggy, used to go to classes of my head on yabba and would a have a tin foil smoke in the toilets at break time to get through the day, to one who decided to really see how far I could go in this teaching business, studied the methodology, tried and experimented with different ways, may not have been the best approach but never went down in pay only up , never applied for jobs was only offered. However, after many years of teaching I actually found my ability to communicate in English got less n less, and I had lost the ability to be able to read anything in English without thinking why did the author write that sentence or use that grammar or that word!
All this knocking of Teflers is stupid and annoying, we have made lives easier for those that came after in terms of being able to communicate, I have been travelling around Indochina for the last year and Cambodians have the best English skills by far.
And I have seen so many former students improve their lives by getting better jobs or promotion because they have English skills.
Travel the world and teach English why not but not as easy as some would think.
Move to another ( poorer ) country and teach English and then expect to be able to get work back home ( AiA) stupid.
Teach English as a way to get by because your are living in that country and have a Thai, Khmer, Viet wife and have people to support , why not? Decide you like the job, even better, carry on.

k440, something to do when you're pissed.
Hear here. Thanks to tefl I have a wife, offspring, land and soon a new house, none of which I would have in UK (well, an ugly wife and sprog could be possible). Like Horace, I've gone from zero and a few problems to being a pillar of society, and although I'm in no way a baller, make enough to get by, especially compared to my wife (govt teacher).horace wrote:I taught English in Cambodia from 2000 till 2016, factory schools, privates and companies. And yeah, having kids is selfish in Cambodia? At least 'our' kids can get EU/Us/au/et el passports, which is perhaps the greatest gift.
It ain't easy, some do, some don't, but big up the TEFL ers, each and every time.

I'm not going to go back nto too much detail here, partly because I simply can't be arsed, but Cambodia is coming nto a time where a good educator can actually dictate a little. ( in some schools, in some situations) what is more nteresting is that education has been a growth market for ages here but not a quality market, with the exception of maybe four or five schools.
The market is ripe for enterprising people to again make lots of money with education, maybe even help people along the way.
T seems the "i" on my keyboard is none too healthy.
