Old, fat, half white...
Greetings:
I am in my early 50s. People say I look like I'm in my mid-40s. I have a BS in Business from an accredited US University. I am in the US State Department process of getting my degree authenticated "as we speak." I am planning to get my TEFL- probably in Thailand. I have no teaching experience other than teaching Sunday school for four years 13 years ago. I do have an excellent written reference for that. I have a clean police check from my state of residence. I keep hearing about people going to Cambodia and am wondering if the market isn't flooded. I had considered Thailand. My soon-to-be ex is from there and I love Thailand. The visa routine in Thailand sounds annoying, and thus thought of giving Cambodia a try. I have read many articles about teaching in Cambodia, but am looking for some current information on my chances of employment. I know this sounds cliche, but I would like to teach and have a positive impact on young lives. Oh and for some reason, Siem Reap sounds appealing. Any input, especially on my overall prospects of landing a decent job, will be greatly appreciated.

"Would prefer to live in Thailand but can't" is actually the #1 reason why people move to Cambodia these days.AceFrehley wrote:The visa routine in Thailand sounds annoying, and thus thought of giving Cambodia a try.

Wow, so you've done some research on the matter. You sound quite brilliant, really. I'd love to see your polling data and methodology used. By the way, who are you quoting anyway? Is that one of the choices for answers in your research or is there a certain orifice you pulled that quote from?gavinmac wrote:"Would prefer to live in Thailand but can't" is actually the #1 reason why people move to Cambodia these days.AceFrehley wrote:The visa routine in Thailand sounds annoying, and thus thought of giving Cambodia a try.
You ARE familiar with the visa process in Thailand, yes (I have a feeling you're an expert on pretty much anything and everything)? What would you rather do? Pay for a visa once a year and be done with it or have to leave a country every 90 days and then hope they haven't made up a new rule since the last time you left? Thinking people ponder such details when they ponder big changes in their lives. I hope that helps.

Yeah, I hear ya. Peronally, I find people who hack apart words like "advertisement" annoying. Is it that it's too many keys or too many syllables?YaTingPom wrote:The first bit sounds like a lonely hearts advert.

Yes there is. I'm surprised gavinmac didn't chime in about it. He seems to know everything, including why people choose to go to Cambodia over Thailand. I must read more of his posts, he sounds like an absolutely brilliant fellow. He must be very wealthy with that intellect. No, really.Miguelito wrote:Is there seriously an "US State Department process of getting a degree authenticated"?
At any rate, it seems there has been trouble with people using phony degrees in Thailand. Shocker, right? So there is a process to get one's college degree authenticated. As most of us who have spent a lot of time in Thailand know, the standards for these types of things can be fluid. However, my due diligence has indicated many people who want to teach in Thailand are being required to have their degrees authenticated. Here is a link to the process:

No, wait. Actually, you raise a decent point- lthough I'm quite certain you weren't thinking at a high enough level for that to have been your intent. I am half white and half latino, and all ready to take on all kinds of trolls. I do it for a living. Well, sort of. Perhaps only the JV crew has been available so far?

Bring on the impending political upheaval, and make it snappy.
Massive stalker
A few threads are giving me the impression that people heralding their "minority" status have sort of run out of things to be angry about but nevertheless want to rail against something.
Sorry you half blacks and you woofters Ah's a telling you. Nobody cares - you're normal now.

There really is no such thing as "half white" around here, I'm afraid. Either you are, or you are not. The one who interviews you will be the judge.
