Highest and lowest hourly payrates
A qualified and experienced white* expat went for an advertised job in a provincial city, was told
there were no full-time jobs available but that probably there would be 2 or 3 evening hours
available at $8 - $10 an hour.
So is that offer the rock-bottom worst or are there still crappier offers?
And who pays most?
*It is embarrassing to write this but it's - maybe better to be 100% clear about it.

Some whities are earning 8 to 10 in the capital city. Some whities are earning less in provincial cities and towns.

Anyone - referring to NS teachers here - willing to work for less than $10 an hour is letting the side down.
A couple of years ago, a university in Siem Reap - Cambodia Mekong University - came up with a splendid wheeze:
from paying NS $5 an hour to do conversation classes (no grammar or anything like that, only simple conversation)
they issued flyers appealing for "volunteers" to pop along and conduct conversation classes. Those who "taught"
twenty such classes received a certificate of appreciation in a plastic frame.
I only wish I could get people to come and clean my house and yard thoroughly on a similar basis.

Earlier this year A highly qualified and experienced Western Dentist approached one the Largest Dental Practices here for work and was asked to work for free for a couple of months trial.

Drwahwah that is Rude with a R. Enough reason for me to boycott them in future. I think we can guess which place it is. Hint if it isn't.

Really depends on the context. Nothing like outrage and threatening to boycott whilst having next to no information.violet wrote:Drwahwah that is Rude with a R. Enough reason for me to boycott them in future. I think we can guess which place it is. Hint if it isn't.
Working an unpaid trial period isn’t unusual here - I have seen it be exploitative and also not. And (from the brief information supplied) seemingly he approached them, not the other way round. If someone doorstepped me looking for a job, I may look for them to prove themselves first also.

Back on topic. The lowest I was ever paid was 5$ an hour back in 1999 in SHV, but it came with free accommodation in a wooden house on stilts. Four hours a day , five days a week but it was enough money at the time. When I moved to PP in 2001 I started on 8$ trial period which quickly rose to 11$ an hour, only trouble was it was full time and only Sunday off.
The highest I ever got paid was 30$ an hour teaching in the factories. Actually that's a lie, briefly for six months I was getting 35 an hourworking weekends teaching some office workers before I started my trip.

What if it was a month trial extended to 2 months because he wasn’t up to standard? What if he needed loads of time off?
What if he was using their equipment/patients for research for his own purposes?
Looks like you are looking for a reason to be miffed with them - even though you don’t really know for sure which dental practice it was.
You go girl.

When I wanted to get into the NGO sector all those years ago, I volunteer in London for 6 months to build up my resume, gain valuable contacts, and get my foot in the door. A year later I headed back to Cambodia as the CPM of a mid sized international NGO.
Not sure it'll work in every sector, but it does in the NGO world.

My posts are just jokes, maybe they're rude, offensive, and politically incorrect. They're not my opinion, viewpoint, idea, or judgement, but they're just fucking jokes so lighten up.
