English/Science/STEM teacher - looking again
After an enjoyable time teaching in Myanmar at an international school, I am looking for teaching (school administration) opportunities again in Cambodia (or other south-east Asian countries).
My employment contract is offered again for the next school year, but the accommodation situation is not acceptable to me, (I have to live out of a suitcase in a hotel), because I'm not allowed to rent a house or condo).
I'm trying to put down roots in my teaching job, which means being able to rent a house, sit in my little garden, cook some food in my kitchen etc.
I will maybe have to take a big drop in salary (I get paid $3,000 tax-free in my current position). But happiness and long-term prospects are more important.
Any suggestions which schools in PP are 'real' schools and not just money-generating businesses for their owners?

What are the requirements to fill your post when you leave?
Do you get $3000 plus free hotel?

I was always under the impression that you have 2 options with most international school contracts in Myanmar:
Live in accommodation provided by the school, or find your own place.
However, most settle for hotels because the electricity supply is so much more reliable.
Did your contract specifically state that you had to live in a hotel, or is that some govt rule? Sounds strange, tbh, never heard of this before. In Yangon, or Nyipadaw?

Vlad, it's a weird police rule that only applies in Naypyitaw. They don't want foreigners mixing with the locals any more than necessary, so do not allow foreigners to rent private houses - everyone must stay in a hotel.
When I taught in Yangon in 2012, I rented an apartment in Chinatown, very cheap, appalling condition, but right in the heart of the local street life.
My school are trying to get this rule 'bent', but I'm not hopeful.
The hotel the school wants to place me in for the next year is a typical Naypyitaw hotel ==> impressive buildings, staff everywhere, no guests.
In the event that I have to stay at the hotel, I asked the hotel manager to put in writing that they will allow me to install my radio antennas......
Oh, the $3,000 is $2,500 salary and then hotel, visa and visa flights to/from Bangkok covered. The typical hotel cost per month is about $550.

Does this mean that you cannot entertain or have guests at your hotel with you?
Do you have school contact info, and what are the requirements to teach there?

I quite like living in Hotels, I am sure at first you thought that was great, but you have to buy your food all the time I guess, and hotel food is likely expensive? Do you get a breakfast there at least? Does the school feed you lunch?

That is correct. Not like Yangon. In Naypyitaw, if I tried this with a Myanmar woman, I'd probably be flogged in public and jailed.......Does this mean that you cannot entertain or have guests at your hotel with you?
Update:
I decided to stay for at least one more year, even though I will have to continue to live out of a suitcase in a hotel room.
The reason for my change of mind is rather 'quirky' and I'll briefly explain.
I moved from Thailand to live in Myanmar in 2012 in an attempt to secure the first amateur radio 'ham' licence since the hobby was banned by the government of the day in 1962. Ham radio is one of my hobbies and I have a UK and a Thai ham licence.
My efforts to get this licence in Myanmar were politely rebuffed for years and years, despite dozens of emails, registered letters and face-to-face presentations to the government department who are responsible for issuing the licence.
Early last week, I printed out my resignation letter with the intention of handing it in to the school boss.
Well, I visited her office 3 times last Monday and Tuesday, but she was unavailable. I went back to my desk, checked my emails and wow!!! - there was an email from the Myanmar government inviting me to come to their office to collect my shiny new amateur radio licence, after 6 years of effort.
Last Thursday, I went to their office, paid the one-off licence/operating fee of about $600, and collected my ham licence and Myanmar call-sign XZ2A.
Interestingly, the government department boss told me that they had decided to issue a licence only to me (and no one else for 3 reasons).
1) They were sick to death of me hassling them
2) They had checked my background and couldn't find anything suspicious (so those internet photos of me and the sheep did no harm...)
3) They appreciated my educational charity efforts in Myanmar.
So I'm here for another year with my ham rig and upmarket hotel room (the hotel allows me to install an antenna). I will have to request a female assistant to help me with my .. er ... erection.
If you have the time or interest then do please give us updates about your time in Nyapyitaw. I must not be the only one who finds this city fascinating and it would be great to hear more about the city from someone living and teaching there. Do you have a blog by any chance?
