We're looking to move to Cambodia next year with two young kids and are currently researching where to make our new home. We would prefer a smaller town and are currently considering Siem Reap or Kampot.
We will be looking to teach English at least initially. We both have TEFL certs and my husband is also a builder / carpenter by trade. We know there will be teaching jobs in SR - but what about Kampot? I prefer Kampot's size and location, but we will need jobs, so if they may be hard to find there we'll make our way to SR instead.
Happy to hear any suggestions of other towns to consider as well!
Would appreciate any advice.
Thank you!
Ruth

SR has more jobs and better paid.
Kampot may soon by Sihanoukvilised, which means if you like teaching Chinese casino workers it could be fun

Well Lady as far as I heard you'd be lucky to be making $800- $1000 a month teaching in Kampot, with a tefl and no degree- the schools outta PP usually dont pay holidays - 29 national plus sometimes a 2 week summer break so that month you might get $400-$500. You need good health insurance which for a family of 4 could be up to $4k per year health care is not great here and it costs, no obamacare here - visa for y'all $300x4 for the year - work permits if you get a job another $110 each. Carpenters get paid less than $200 a month, so a non starter....unless your husband is a real crack shot like Joseph, in which case maybe, just maybe he would get some work off westerners but he would need to get a work permit which to get would mean him setting himself up as a business, more of your $$$. Oh yeah gotta get them kids to school - if you were lucky enough to teach at an Ok school they may let 'em go to it for free....otherwise, depending on age you gotta pay anywhere from $1000-$10000 per year for the schools.....oh yeah then somewhere to live sure Siem Reap and Kampot maybe can get a 2 bed place for $200-$250 a month, plus $50 month bills.....lets say you never eat out or drink you can cook at home (no western things like cheese, hot dogs and all that) for $200 a month.
that ain;t considering things like holidays, trips home, birthdays, fun activities etc... make sure you got a lotta savings
I aint no maths teacher so maybe you can tot it all up for me.

That's only for basement quality work. Several khmer carpenters i used to work with in phnom penh earn near or over $1000 a month. This is precision proper work though like western 1mm and under tolerances done on cnc machines and not the haphazard nonsense though. Granted it's nothing like a western salary but nothing like 200 a month.Jack Frost wrote:Carpenters get paid less than $200 a month, so a non starter....

For carpentry (perhaps you mean woodwork) search construction companies on Facebook, and post a specific thread on here asking construction supervisors. You'll get decent work if you know what you're doing.
