Gyms / Exercise

What exercise facilities are available in Cambodia? How much should you expect to be paying? What are the best times to go when it is least crowded?

Reviews and rates for The Place, Paddy's Gym, FitnessOne at the Himarwari, Physique Club at the Cambodiana, Amrita at Raffles, Muscle Fitness Centre, InterContinental gym, SOFit at the Sofitel http://www.travelfish.org/blogs/phnompe ... hnom-penh/

The Sofitel gym looks really nice, and apparently will offer a free day pass to anyone that is considering joining.

Anyone know which gyms have actual squat racks/power racks instead of a Smith Machine? I'm also looking for a place I can do deadlifts.

What about kettlebells, can I get them in PP?

* a Smith Machine is the one with two poles that guide the bar along a fixed path. I'm looking for a rack where you place the bar on your shoulders, lift and walk out.

I think the Intercontinental Gym has a rack. I will be very surprised if you find any kettlebells in Cambodia , I have never seen any and have seen a lot of gyms.

The best value gym is the Cambodian Weightlifting Club gym which is on the far side of the Olympic stadium near the pool, 2000 riel for foreigners open from 0400 - 1900 every day (can't confirm the opening time but that's what I was told). They have bars with rotating sleeves, squat rack, cushioned area and bumper plates for olympic lifts. Its also dirty as hell and somewhat unsafe which seems to be the standard for gyms in this price range. You also need to provide your own equipment to include collars for the bars.

Now if your squat or deadlift workouts involve more than 3 plates per side you don't want to goto Stadt Olympic during peak hours since there aren't enough plates to conveniently share.

IIRC The Place has a squat rack AND power rack and so does the Intercon.

Paddy's is a great place and great value $10 /hr for 1 on 1 private boxing or MT instruction from local fighters, but bring your own gloves since the loaners are in bad shape. You can get a pair of 16oz Windys at the shops near Olympic stadium for about $55, wraps for $10, and shorts for $5.

In between Paddy's, and Stadt Olympic's track, pool and gym you can get in pretty good shape for dirt cheap.

There is a gym on St. 200 a little bit east (towards the river) of Monivong. Very casual, big and breezy, only a few others there on a recent weekday afternoon. The cost is $1, stay as long as you like. No lockerroom, no showers, lots of iron.

I checked out a few gyms recently:

Himawari (Fitness One) - Very small gym, but nice outdoor pool. Rather pathetic offering in terms of free-weights (and machines for that matter). A few of the treadmills were out of order. Other features include: steam room, tennis court, outdoor jacuzzi. $7 per session, $18 for weekend (I assume that includes Friday?) and $75 for the month.
023 214 555, ext 881 or fitnessone@himawari.com.kh
313 Sisowath Quay
Open daily from 6:00am till 10:00pm

VIP Sports Club - Pretty ghetto gym - feels as though the place could collapse at any moment. I can't imagine that the floor could actually support the weight of some of our more portly expats - seriously. A few ping pong tables, some tennis courts, a pool, boxing, weights, treadmills, large fans, but pretty bloody hot.
$3 per session or coupon options as someone else mentioned.
023 993 535 or vipsport@camintel.com
227 Norodom Blvd
Open daily from 6:00am till 9:00pm

Cambodiana (Physique Club) - Very nice pool, decent gym (not huge, but better than the two above), working treadmills, tolerable temperature, a nice selection of dumbbells that no one else was using.
There is an 'Early Bird' promo on at the moment for coming to the gym at off-peak times.
012 931 518 or physique@hotelcambodiana.com.kh
313 Sisowath Quay
Open daily from 6:00am till 10:00pm

Muscle Fitness Centre - I was unable to use this one, because upon entry I was required to sign a declaration that I was under 80kg in order to use the treadmills and something about being under 90kg for some of the other gear. That rules out a significant percentage of the expat population (male or female).
Supa cheap though: $3 per session, coupon options, $30/month, $76.50/3months, $135/6months, $234/12months
012 796 374 or info@musclefitnesscentre.com
St 95 & St 136

The Place - The best gym I've found, but costs a tad more than most of the others. Great selection of free weights, machines, plenty of working treadmills, nice pool, sauna, steam rooms, ping pong, clean locker rooms and an "Internet bar" with a handful of Macs.
$15/session, $150/month, $350/3months, $575/6months, $850/year

For me, it's the one at Le Royal. I usually get there about 6.45am just after it's been cleaned. The most wonderful thing is the partly overhanging trees, with early morning sunlight filtering through. Marvelous after a good work out and a sauna!
