Neak ta, neak thom
Neak ta, neak thom
A neak ta is a protective spirit, a neak thom is a big man (in the sense of important). Are the two the same word? What I'm getting at is, does Khmer make a distinction between spirits and humans, or are they treated, at least in speech, as the same thing, similar in both being living beings?
Not sure about the semantics, but a neak ta isn't always 'protective' of people, maybe places.
Neak Ta gives people stomach ailments.
Neak Ta can hear your words and grant your wishes in an unpleasant way, especially in area such as graveyards and holy mountains.
NEVER say something like 'I love this place, I wish I could stay for ever' otherwise a truck hits you on the next corner. Never swear or say 'bad word' in areas Neak Ta hang out or bad things will happen.

Massive stalker
From what I heard, a neak ta is a protective spirit living either on a mountain or in the forest. You can call it for protection is case you're afraid, or you have the feeling you are surrounded by bad spirits.pedros wrote:Not sure about the semantics, but a neak ta isn't always 'protective' of people, maybe places.

The story about saying anything 'bad' / 'dangerous' in forest or on mountains is true as far as I know. Never express your negative thoughts / fears in these places (example: wow, look at that tree, it nearly collapses. We'd better not walk under it, it might hit us.....) because the 'bad spirits' might make it come true, according to the Cambodians.
A neak thom is just a big man. Many can be seen around PP cruising in their 2014 Landrover costing over 100K.
