Best Khmer learning app by FAR
I just found an app last week call Memrise (memrise.com). I've been using on Android, it's really easy to use and teaches reading, writing and listening simultaneously, but best of all there's a load of Khmer content on there. Particularly impressive is the 1000 most frequent words in Khmer course, this is important because it teaches you the words you need to know rather than the ones you want to know.
Studies have show that with just the 1000 most common words in most languages you will have around a 72% comprehension rate, 2000 will get you to 90% and then it's diminishing returns from there. The app is fun to use, is really well structured in terms of repetition, what makes it really stand out is that it focuses on reading which is so important when learning Khmer in order to advance rapidly.
For the Khmer 1000 words course there are 51 levels, with level 1 being the most frequent words and level 51 being the least frequent, so there is something there for most levels.

Using it on iOS to brush up. Can't get the spelling function to work properly in Khmer script, can't get the letter order to type out properly.

This is a great app starkmonster, thanks for sharing. I've never bothered with reading/writing, but this little badger might just get me to pick that up too.

Gotta mention that the audio files and I'd assume the frequency list were taken from one of my projects. I don't particularly care about that, but people who found this Memrise course helpful might also want to check out the audio dictionary at kheng.info/search/, and the reading segmentation tool at kheng.info/read/

They do give kheng.info a mention on the Memrise page I noticed now, so no big deal. I'm fine with anyone using these files in general. I should probably put an open source license on them.

Nice work Kheng. I think the amazing stuff being done by young Khmer programmers is going almost entirely unnoticed by the expatriate community as it never seems to rate a mention during the usual moaning about Cambodians (on this forum anyway, but I'd say in general too).kheng.info wrote:They do give kheng.info a mention on the Memrise page I noticed now, so no big deal. I have used memrise and from lesson 7 (or 8?) onwards there's no sound files available - at least in my version. Anyone having this problem too? If you get the paid version, will you get the soundfiles? I can't find anything on the memrise website.

I'm going to start using the app. i'd like an answer to Kachang's question too.Kachang wrote:I have used memrise and from lesson 7 (or 8?) onwards there's no sound files available - at least in my version. EDIT I see on the website it says "To get used to typing in Khmer, I recommend starting with my course on Khmer script here: http://www.memrise.com/course/931460/kh ... ith-audio/ The course is still a work in progress, but I decided to make it public. I am still adding definitions and audio."
maybe just catching up on the audio
