^ so would saying "losing a chance/opportunity" reflect what you want to say?
If yes, then I would propose:
But that's not nearly as scary as the second, which is losing
ប៉ុន្តែវាមិនធ្វើ៌ឱ្យខ្ញុំភ័យខ្លាច ដូចរឿងទីពីរ កឺ បាត់បង់ឱកាស
Pontae vea min tvoeu aoy phey khlach doch roeung tee pee koeu batbong owkas
With regards to the "fake" thing, in romance, Cambodians would often instead say "monous baok bras - មនុស្សបោកប្រាស់ " which means con person, or a fraud. បោកប្រាស់ (baok bras) is often shortened to បោក (baok).
So I would suggest
I am not a fraud!
ខ្ញុំមិនមែនមនុស្សបោកប្រាស់ទេ!
Khnyom min maen monoos baok bras te
If you're a guy, OP, then you could precise your gender
I am not a fraud (man)!
ខ្ញុំមិនមែនបុរសបោកប្រាស់គេទេ!
Khnyom min maen boros baok bras ke te

Joon, I think the fake person is more like មនុស្យលាក់ពុត, no? More like a hypocrite?
I think this has been suggested before, but it may be better to just say, ខ្ញុំមានបំណងស្មោះស ហើយមិនដែលបោកស្រី

That would depend on what is meant with "fake". It could be dishonest, hypocritical, shallow, superficial, player, etc. Needs some more context in which he was told he was fake.

I think the problem here is that "fake person" isn't a common term in English, at least not around my way. When I first heard it the first thing that came to mind was a Barbie doll.

That's certainly part of the problem.starkmonster wrote:I think the problem here is that "fake person" isn't a common term in English, at least not around my way. When I first heard it the first thing that came to mind was a Barbie doll.
Another problem is that even some common terms in English can't get cleanly translated to Khmer.
It requires a translation then a following sentence to explain it.

i find in khmer negative words arent often commonly used for example something is either good or not good, tasty or not tasty, honest or not honestStill wrote:Thank you for your reply. Yes, of course I mean "dishonest", not "mannequin/actor". I also agree with you when you say that honest person is much easier to understand. The primary meaning of 'not fake/not dishonest" and "honest" are the same, but the reason of my choice is that two expessions have different connotations. If I say I am honest, it is only a statement. But I would like to use as a refusal, because I was told I was fake.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:For the first one.
Yes, the use of រឿង is much clearer than របស់
For the second one - I'm not a fake person. I just don't think it translates well. I asked two Khmer staff members and they came up with different understandings. One was pretty close but she was guessing (& she knows a lot of English). One understood it as a negative phrase another said it was saying you aren't an actor (without any real negative connotations). If you use this then you will need to follow it up with a few more sentences explaining what you mean.
If you just say you are an honest person and it will be much more easily understood.
Mean Dtuk Mean Trey, Mean Loy Mean Srey
