Grandchild vs. Thief in Khmer
The difference between "grandchild" and "thief" in Khmer seems really subtle to me. Seems like it is easy for me to say thief, but grandchild is tricky to say right. How do you say grandchild properly? Thank you so much.

Khmer is very hard to learn without mastering the written Khmer (though then you realize that they don't speak as clearly as the script, hence the problem).riverside130 wrote:The difference between "grandchild" and "thief" in Khmer seems really subtle to me. ចោរ is thief. It's like "jow."
ចៅ is grandchild. It's like "jouw."
As with English, context is everything. "Too" and "two" is not much easier for them.

and Granchild is Jov,
the khmers romanize it as a V but its sound is more like "au" sound, its really hard to romanize the ៅ vowel, and its a vowel that always gets pronounced wrong by foreigners
its used in words like ទៅ - Tov - to go,
and នៅ - Nov - to stay/location,
and names like Srey Pov - ស្រីពៅ - youngest child,
Srey Pov is one that always gets people, they see a girls facebook name as Srey Pov and so they always say Pov when its actually pronounced Pau
if you watch this video you will see what i mean by the sound, its the Vowel at 58 seconds
the vowel used in Jao (theif) is 54 seconds
the vowel used in Jov/Jau (grandchild) is at 58 seconds
you should be able to hear the difference a bit clearer
Mean Dtuk Mean Trey, Mean Loy Mean Srey
